First off, I have read the few threads that talk about the code 45 and check engine light in my 1990 240sx SOHC 5-Speed. My question pertains to the connectors on each injector.

When idling, the car is a bit rough as it has been for years. I have replaced all four injectors in the past as well as the rubber O-rings on three occasions. There is no gas smell like in the past so I have no reason to belive the CEL 45 is accurate in that respect.

When I moved the worn connectors around with my fingers during idle, the car would either hesitate with a low idle or rev up, depending on the direction of the push. My question is this:

Could these old injector plugs be replaced and possibly solve the code or are there other more likely culprits to the code?

My car has passed the California SMOG inspection just today with acceptable values. The only thing keeping me from being legally passed is to get that Check Engine Light off.

Any ideas?

John

does the code pop up right after you erase it? if not I say erase it and get it resmogged. You could have a problem with the oxygen sensor.

I tried to erase it by using mode IV, but the light stayed on. Maybe you can tell me the method you use to erase the code and I'll give it a try agian.

As for the smog guys, they told me to self-diagnose since I seemed semi competent and that when I got rid of the code to bring it back, they will re-check it and certify the car then. Nice guys so far.

disconnect both battery cables and touch them together for 30 sec. then reconnect the battery. the light should be out. if not your failure is immediate. on any car [not just nissan] that is obdI you can erase codes that way any obdII cars[1995 or 1996 ,depends on model, and newer] you cant do that. That code is generated by the computer when the average reading is rich[the mid point of voltage sweeps is above .6v] from the o2 sensor even when the ecm tries to lean it up by reducing the fuel injectors pulse width.

Well I tried touching the cables together after disconnecting and the light remained on. Again this is an OBDI car, so my guess is this confirms a continuing problem.

What sorts of items should I check?

Fuel Filter?Fuel Pump?Rubber hoses?

Thanks for your help, I am very thankful to get response from this community.

I use the consult to erase the codes. The method i gave you is possible on any obdI car and I know you dont have a consult handy. it wouldnt be any of those items. pull the vaccum line off your fuel pressure regulator and check to see if one it has fuel in it [not suppose to] and two does the idle change when you pull it off. this would tell you its not leaking and its working properly. It would be better to use a fuel pressure gauge to check its operation as the idle change would be minimal and possibly hard to detect.

Ok, this morning I read the directions for checking the codes in diagnostic mode more cafefully and found out how to use mode IV to clear the code 45. It is now cleared, but if the Check Engine Light comes on again in the next few days I will have to track down the problem which I am taking as a rich fuel mixture.

I'll let you all know if the simple erasure of the code works or a more in depth job is required.

Again, thanks for all your advice! This has been a very helpful site.
