Hey Yall', Just picked up a 1989 240SX (147k miles) and am tryin to fix some of the problems to get it to a daily driver. One of the things that I have noticed is that on OCCASION, the clutch pedal will only come half of the way back up. I can pull it back all the way up, and it will "repressureize". I checked the Clutch Fluid Resivour and its full. There seems to be no leaks around the Master Cyl, or around the Slave Cyl (Although there seems to be a slight yellowish tinted substance on (top?) the transmission, im assuming that its brake fluid. I just can see anywhere that It would be leaking from...) 2nd Problem (which may be related to the first) is that the transmission has been shifting kinda notchy especially before the engine warms up. I am checking the level of the gear oil tonight (After the 100 Degree weather cools a little) in the transmission. The transmission may have a leak from the transmission-to-driveshaft seal, as there is the reddish oily stuff on the back of the transmission (No bad smells though..?) Any ideas? The engine/transmission has alot of built-up gunk from lots of years of neglect, so the yellowish fluid and the reddish fluid could be from previous problems (?). Im probably gonna try to clean (at least the transmission) tonight so I can tell. Any feedback would be great! Thanks yall!

Both problems are likely related to the clutch hyd. Suggest replace master and slave cylinders and bleed clutch. Not enough pressure from hyd. will cause less clutch fork travel and create a stiff or hard shifting problem.

it may also be your throwout bearing. I had smilar symptoms when mine was going out. Mine was sliding like it was supposed to and mine actually desintigrated and threw the bearings out of it! But the master and slave cylnders are a whole lot easier to mess with so I would try them first.

Well thanks to dead batteries on flashlights, I couldnt do anything on it tonight. Thanks for the responses so far, as I kinda had a feeling that it has something to do with the slave/master cyl. Before I change it, i think I am gonna just try to bleed the clutch... who knows, maybe there is just some air in the line (hey I got to try the free stuff first)It just seems odd to me that it is TOTALLY dry around the Master Cyl and the slave cyl... I figured that they would leak or something...

pul the lip back on the slave to see if fluid is inside the dust boot if so it is considered leaking even though your not seeing it externally. the clutch master cyl would likely leak into the car where it comes through the firewall look up under the dash where it comes in. if no fluid is seen anywhere the problem could be an internal leak in the master cyl(fluid bypassing valve when applying pressure) try the air bleed first if no cure ,try replacing master first and rebleed.

I had this problem several times before on different cars. In my civic, my friend put wrong brake fluid in clutch master which made seals enlarge on slave and clutch master. I bleed the line and had to replace the slave and clutch master. The second time the clutch master was leaking and leaked out all the brake fluid. The third time i had a bad clutch master and had to rebuild it, 10.99 at autozone. Nick
