Hi all,

This is my first post.

I have a stock 89 240sx with 125K miles on it, never did any work on a car (I am a software guy, not hardware...), though I recently replaced the front brake/disk/pads with the help of a friend.

The clutch is starting to slip (and probably unrelated, there is chatter noise from the gearbox)

I do not race, but I do like to drive hard/fast

I do not have any money now (daugher has leukemia and medical bills and other associated expenses are taking their toll), but I must have a reliable car.

any recommendations as to what and where to buy a new clutch?

thanks,

-avi

I would recommend an exedy stage 1 organic street clutch kit, or if you don't want to cough up the money an ACT, or even an OEM one. I would stay away from Spec.

For what you are using the car for, a stock clutch kit at one of your local auto parts store will work fine. It should run you about $125.00. There is no need to spend extra money on the after market high performance ones unless you just want to.

I do not care as much about performance but I do care about long life durability of the clutch, and I do drive hard/aggresively, but no track or racing, and the car is completely stock.

I was looking at ebay, what do you guys think about the XTD/XTR/F1 stage 2 carbon/kevlar clutch?

supposedly they last longer than stock, and cost just about the same as OEM, about $130 on ebay

Exedy OEM kit is about $125 (clutchcityonline.com) while Exedy Stage 1 kit is about $300 (after 15% discount)

while clutchmaster fx200 kevlar is just over $400 (but at this price, might as well get the OEM...)

resurfacing the flywheel is about $100, and there are some cheap lightweight flywheels on ebay for about $150

what do you think about the cheap ebay stuff? is it any good?

thanks,

-avi

Where are you getting a flywheel resurfaced for $100.00. You can buy a new one for that. I thought you were on a budget, sounds like you want some performance stuff, if that is the case, then go for it and buy the ebay stuff. Personally, I dont trust ebay.

I had an ACT street/strip kit on my KA-E and it worked great the rest of the time till I swaped, about 2 years and gripped great.

local store I called. they were trying to rip me off, which is why I started to look at eBay.

do not need/want performance stuff, but on the other hand, if I can get extended service life out of upgraded parts, it might be worth spending a bit more on the parts to save on labor.

as it, I am planning to look at other, local part stores (could not do it for the last few days, my daugher had really rough few days)

thanks again for all your help.

OEM clutch from nissan would be the way to go. I had a offbrand autozone one on my car and it was very very bad (slipping, and very undrivably soft).

Yeah, for the money the OEM clutch is the way to go. It should give you another 125-150k which will probably be about as long as your motor will last. If financial concerns are your primary concern, then, I hate to say it, but you should drive easier. Everything will last longer if you do.

Sorry about your daughter. Hope she gets better.
