it depands on how bad the hg was blown if it overheated it might have to be resurfaces,have the engine deck,and check for leaks,also need to check cylinder head for crack.But it was just blown,and she didin't drive it,you could just change the hg and go from there.and it could add up to more that $300,but if you change your hg yourself could save yourself some money,and learn in the process. black smoke could mean just runing to rich and not buring off the extra fuel,if the hg was blown it would have been white smoke and smell like coolant. You can also check the coolant for drops of oil in it,and your oil would look milky when oil and water mix.my two cent's
