Help! I know nothing about cars I admit. But I am trying to learn more and I need your guys help.

I start the 240 (automatic transmission) this morning to take the kids to school. Gave it 5 minutes to warm up, drove down the street, everythings fine. It's changing gears like it's suppossed to. I get out on the main thoroughfare and still everythings fine. Light changes, step on the gas, car is at 30 mph and not changing gears! I try taking my foot off of the gas, step on it again and still not changing gears. I shift into neutral for a second and then back into drive, finally! it starts changing gears. No more problems for the rest of the morning drive.

What is wrong with this car? Is this just a quirk of 240's? Do I need to have the transmission checked? And if so, give me some advice so those rotten mechanics that thrive on taking advantage of a woman who knows nothing about cars, can't snowball me.

Thanks guys!

I also know nothing about automatics. I would say drive it a little more and see if you can duplicate the problem. If not dont worry a bout it. You or one of your kids might have hit she shifter back a gear into second. I would wait untill some1 that knows the auto replys though.~Sam

Thanks Geo! Hitman has been so busy lately because of the hacker that I didn't want to bug him. :)

Yea, I have that problem occassionally on my Malibu. Sometimes I put it in Drive and it wont go anywhere, put it in neutral, then back in drive and its good. They reccomended a transmission flush, the fluid can do that to the car. Just basically what Geo said.

Same thing happened to my car. it was just the fluid. You could do it yourself but it does make quite a mess. It's recommended to do it about every 60k miles or so.

Yup sounds like the fluid... MY camry used to do that and it turned out to be low in fluid and it was very old...

i was told you change gear oil like every 5 years unless you race it alot.I changed mine out 3 times at intervals of 2 years apiece. Its always pretty fresh when i change it then...

Hitman just changed the ATF either last week or the week before last, I think. It could be the auto control unit. It might be a good idea to have either a transmission shop check it out or a nissan dealership. I'll ask my nissan mechanic friend what he thinks. And not to sound like I'm selling something, but he does have an extra auto transmission he wants to get rid of in case you might be needing one. We pulled it from a red vert with 70k-ish on it.
