i just picked up a 97 240sx the other day that had been sitting for the past six months, and i can't get this car to start for the life of me. i replaced the spark plug ring gasket because the first two plug holes had oil in them, replaced all four plugs, put a new fuel filter and fresh gas in the tank and gave it a look over to make sure nothing was unplugged. the car would still not start, it cranks and sputters the first maybe 2 seconds. I hooked up a scanner to it and got a P100(mass air flow circuit), a P115(engine coolant temp sensor fualt), so then i took the MAFS off my 95 and put it on still wouldn't start. can anybody give me some insight on why this car will not start, it would be greatly appriciatedthanks, mike

check to make sure the injectors are letting fuel into the engine make sure you are getting spark to the plugs

Well first of all you shouldn't have oil in your combustion chamber. Getting oil on your plugs and replacing just the plug gasket ain't gonna do nothing. Your piston rings should be the ones keeping the oil out of the combustion chamber, you have to dig deeper, always make sure you check your oil level on the dipstick when doing a no start diagnosis, you may little to begin with or you may be burning large amounts. With no oil, your engine is going to seize. Because you're saying you have oil on some of your plugs, i'm guessing only a couple of cylinders are actually firing. take out the plugs one at a time and check for spark. If you actually happen to get your engine started by luck, listen to the motor, if it sounds like your lawnmower, one or more of the cylinders is definately missing. Well man i dunno what else to tell ya hahaha, have fun with it

the oil wasn't in the combustion chamber it was on the top of the plugs from the leaky sparkplug gasket on the bottom of the valve cover. battery is fine, have yet to check the timing, how do you check the injectors to see if they are releasing fuel? and the longer it sits the more it acts like it will start on the first turn of the key

wow

If you got spark and compression it's definitely timing or fuel.

Replace that coolant sensor, its cheap and it can cuase your car to act really strange. Not sure if it can stop it from starting, but considering your throwing that code you should replace it anyway.

I dont see how the timing would be off, cars dont just slip out of timing. Have you pulled each sparkplug, had someone turn your car over while you ground the plug to the engine? Make sure each plug is sparking.

Are you sure your fuel pump is cutting on and your getting fuel pressure to the rail?

Headlight Fluid? If it's not timing, check compression. If it tests ok, cool. I would definately check your injectors though. There's a tool called a noid light you can hook up to your injectors to see if they are getting a pulse. Sometimes cars that sit for a long time just take a while to crank. What was the condition of the car before it started sitting? If all else fails, tow it to a mechanic.

I've also heard of holes and things in the duct work after the MAF causing problems. Probably not it but it's worth checking.

sometimes all you need to do is spray a little starter fluid down the throttle body to get it to start. its happened to me at least twice in 3 years. it will tell you if your car is running okay though.

im not sure what the setup is for air intake, but i know on the s13 the intake hose had cracks and splits in it right b4 the throttle body, and after some wear, it wouldn't start, i tapped it up and away it went, see the mafs will be thrown off by the extra aircomming in after the sensor, and make is lean, then the senso tries to correct and makes it too rich to start, check for air leaks,

you should check timing and check the rotor and if ur geting any spark or check wit the fuel gauge if ur getting the right amount of fuel in the motor but check it after the fuel filter.
