Well its been a week or so since something broke on my 240 so i should have expected it, but all the sudden my clutch gave out today. She was running fine, then i down shifted to make a turn and when i let the clutch out, it wouldnt engage at all, in any gear. It wouldnt even grab a little, which makes me think its something hydraulic and hopefully cheap (under 200 bucks). Anyone have any thoughts on what it might be?

Do clutches go out in a matter of seconds? There one moment and gone the next?

It's happened to me on a 89 Celica GTS before.

If it exists, it can go out any second.

Check your master and slave cylinders. Make sure you have fluid in the resevoir too. If your slave just gave out, all that fluid is on the ground when it gave out. Both of those are fairly easy and inexpensive fixes.

Thats the first thing that everyone in my family said- "check the fluid". And that was the first thing that I did. I couldnt find any fluid anywhere in the engine bay, and there were no visible leaks. The resevior is full too. Its already been towed to my buddy's garage. So I will know tomorrow what the problem is.

Best case scenario.. your linkage might need to be adjusted. If the clutch/pressure plate wear out.. it will go gradually over a few days or weeks. You would have noticed a lagging clutch if you are concientious of your vehicle's performance. If you pay attention to such things... and you didn't notice any warning signs... then it is most likely something like a pilot bearing or other small part that has fallen out of place or busted.

Clutch wear USUALLY has warning signs... busted clutch parts happen without notice..... BUT even if it is something internal that is broken... for the labor you'll pay for them to take it apart... might as well replace the clutch while they are in there. Also... most of that stuff is sold as a "clutch kit" and it will be all inclusive.

Thanks for the info, If he cant find anything externally wrong and has to drop the transmission, I planned on replacing the clutch anyway due to the fact that i noticed a little slipping

usually when the clutch goes, it will not go in gear. if it will not go in any gears, its the clutch, but if it has problems going into gear, it can be a number of things. Does it grind? Get Stuck? It could be many different things from fluid to synchros. I'am not sure if it could be the linkage. Correct me If Iam wrong, I have heard dont need linkage adjustments due to them being internal linkage. I dont know a good deal about transmissions.

It could very well be synchros. I have never had to play with my transmission or clutch on this car (knock on wood) so sitting here I couldn't tell you if the linkage is internal... but every other transmission/clutch I have serviced has had typical external linkage... I'll have to get under my car and check it out... I've never heard about it on this car.....

Just heard from the mechanic, and its the clutch. . . well that means my suspension has to wait another two weeks.
