Hey i have a 1992 240 sx auto. And lately its been acting like its in neutral spurratically in stop and go traffic and will revv but not accelerate. I checked the transmission fluid. I was convinced it had to do with exhaust backfire and i completely overhauled the whole exhaust system and i fixed oil pan leaks. Anyone have any suggestions?

how many miles do you have? I would say its probably your transmition i dont know alot about autos but i would say its either one of the several wet clutches in the trans or the torque converter either way im betting on your transmission causing this.
Does it free rev(fast like its in neutral?)
or does it rev slow like its in gear but you just dont go anywere?

Worn out bands and clutches sounds like.

Sorry, but torque converters do not have the same type clutches... They are mainly fluid driven. There is a pump in your torque converter, and when it stops... well, there you go. No power transfered to the transmission.

wow. I do realize the post is wrong, but I didn't imply the torque converter had bands/clutches. I don't know why I was off base like that tho. Regardless, you sir are correct.

actually auto transmissions do have clutches :chuckle: not like what you think of on a manual trans, more of the way a limited slip differential has clutches, as in mutible frictions surfaces to smoothly transfer power

but back to the question at hand, did you check your trans fluid with the car running and in park? def souunds like a slipping trans

As they said, torque converter. Do a 5 speed swap.
