Hi. My '96 240 SX makes a knocking noise when I let off the clutch when switching gears. This is a major problem... Anyone know what is causing this and about how much parts are? Do you think it can be fixed easily or is it complicated? Also, I have changed fuses and light bulbs for my taillights many times but the fuses keep blowing. Also my dashboard lights quit working after my taillights quit. I want to disconnect the battery cable and check to see if any wires are loose. Where can I find the wires for the taillights and the dashboard? How do I get to them? Lots of help would be appreciated.please feel free to email me at [email protected] put 240 SX in subject line. (or respond here).Any links for parts would be great (i don't know what the parts are supposed to look like so a link to the specific part would be perfect!)Thank youJennifer

knocking noise is most likely going to be your throwout bearing.

I'm thinking the same but I've never heard a t/o bearing make a knocking noise, its more of a rattle to me.

I noticed today that it also makes the same noise on the right side of the rear end when I tap the brake (not hard but start slowing down w/o pushing in the clutch) and also when I let off the gas (it happens mostly when I am at 2800 RPMs or less). Also when on the hwy and i hit the brake to slow down for a road block (again w/o pushing in the clutch until I had to at about 1500 RPMs) it makes the same noise and the steering wheel is kind of shaky.

ok i found this thread so im gonna try to bring it back alive for my problem. everytime i let off the pedal in gear (usually at higher rpms) my transmission chatters at me. i know its coming from my transmission because when i take off my shift boot it gets louder in my car. its been doing this everscince i did the swap and just recently when its cold, if i pull out in first or reverse it will make a whining noise until i put it back in neutral and press the clutch back in. i have a 6 puck clutch. is this normal or would that be the throw out or pilot. and on a scale of 1 to 10 how important is it to change when they go out. im like the majority of people i dont want to change things until i absolutely have to.

you might be right about the fly wheel. its the stock flywheel shaved to 14 pounds the guy that helped me put my car together while i was deployed had it done.....so .... idk. is that extreme if its that uneven?

im afraid your transmission is on its way out.mine did the same thing and it ended up grinding gears then loosing gears..your input shaft bearings are going gout. or some bearing in the transmission.. eitherway your gonna need a new transmission sooner or later

and to the OPit sounds like your subframe bushings are shot.jack up the car and take a look at themif there in pretty bad shape then thats most likely your knocking problem.happens when you let off the gas, get on the gas hard, get on the break hard.. anything that will force the back end of the car to squat on the subframe or hit the subframe.. if your bushings are bad you'll get a knocking.

this sounds kinda similar to what i was goin through, after awhile of driving it i threw a cluster bearing and dropped two gears. i just ended up getting a new transmission. i hope u arent goin thru the same thing man. good luck @ least!
