240 SX Engine swap

Hi there,

I have 2 240 SXs. One is a 89 with a manual transmission. This car has thrown a rod. The other is a 91 with an automatic transmission. The transmission on this one is shot. I was wondering how much work would be involved in taking the engine out of the 91 and putting it in the 89. I definitely want to do it this way because the 91 has a rusted undercarriage. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't know much about working on cars yet.

ud need a new ecu and to take the wiring harness from the 91, modify it for a 5spd and put it in the 89, then swap the pedal and all the shiftin mecanism and all, and the trannies are all teh same for all years of teh 240, so not a problem there, do a search, u'll find out exactly whats involved in doing a swap like that, and then post any questions u have remaining

I've tried searching on the forums before. I have never been able to find information on switching out 2 stock engines from different year cars.

The new ECU will be required because of a different engine model? is this why?

What kind of modifications would be required for the wiring harness?

Could you be more specific about the "swap the pedal and all the shiftin mecanism and all" part?

look up manual swaps, that'll give u the info u need on that. u need the ecu cause of the engine and also the trans, obviously the 89 trans bolts to the 91 engine, and the wiring, im not sure about, i think no modification is needed maybe, the auto has a few more wires though

This same swap was done to my son's 89 last week

89 auto to 91 5 speed

takes some time but can be done... need ecu and harness out of your 91 installed in your 89 plugs in... don't cut it!!

AC mounting brackets are different... take them from the 91

you will need to mount the clutch master plus mount the 91 pedals... the 89 has big brake pedal and the stick will have a little brake pedal

all your old auto consol stuff will work

lots of work...but a good way to kill a weekend
