I'm new to this forum because in the twenty years I've had this car, the only problems I've had were a bad starter and two fuel injectors. This is a '91 coupe automatic, base model with AC. 141K miles. I recently changed a fuel injector and didn't get the lower o-ring seated correctly, so when I tried to start it, gasoline flooded the cylinder and I ended up with a couple of quarts of gas in the oil pan. The level on the dipstick was about two inches above full mark. Mistakenly left it sitting for a week till I could get back to it, drained the oil into several pans and left them outside to evaporate the gas, so that I could safely recycle the oil. When I emptied the pans, there was a bit of sludge in the bottom of each.
Now I have an oil leak from what looks to be the front crank seal - oil is dripping from that pulley when I park it, and it leaks about a 4"-6" circle right away, and then stops. It doesn't seem to be leaking much when it's running, but that may be because I'm running a Krankvent valve, and the crankcase vacuum is preventing leaks. I've been driving the car daily for three weeks since changing the oil and filter, and for a few days the leak stopped entirely, but now it's back.
Did the gas in the oil ruin my seals, maybe by removing some gunk that was helping them seal? Am I totally screwed? Magic remedies in a bottle? Change to "high mileage" oil and pray?

Thanks
Alan

Hey, Welcome to NICO!

I think I would replace the front main seal. Having no leaks all these years seems just fortunate to me. I'd also plan on doing an oil system flush, just to get that messed up oil out of there as much as possible.

Thanks for the reply - I was thinking I'd picked the wrong forum. I think I've had good luck with leaks because of the Krankvent - the cam cover used to seep before I put it on, and the performance boost was surprising. I changed the oil and filter first thing and started driving the Nissan daily to see how things were. Couldn't believe it when the leak stopped for several days or about a hundred miles. Then it came back and now seems worse. Hope the rear seal doesn't go...
Central Coast? I'm in SLO.

Yeah the gasoline very well could have made the seals hard and brittle, although like was mentioned, the fact that you're on all the original seals still means you were on borrowed time. You should probably just replace the front main seal and do a good inspection to see if anything else is leaking, or just live with the leak. Going to a thicker viscosity (like 10-40) will help mitigate the leak some.

I used to live the SLO life, 5 Cities, etc. I liked it. I'm up in Monterey Bay now. Front main seal isn't too tough, and you get to buy a large socket for your crank pulley! That will prove useful in the future. Rear seal is best to get at during a clutch replacement.
