ok first off, Hello all, I just bought a 1991 240sx SE coupe today, eventually I want to do a sr20det swap, but I cant exactly afford that yet, as I just dropped 4k on the car. Are there any cheap/free things I can do to the car to get power gains? I searched around on the forums but didnt come up with anything, maybe im not searching for the right thing. Thanks in advance

best way to gain power on a stock engine is with a good tune up. Not exactly free but it's a good way to save money in the long term especially considering how much gas has gone up in cost (well at least where I'm at).

Alright here is a list of things you need/should do to an S13 for better power, and gas mileage that aren't expensive........there may be more, but this is what I've done.

NGK plugs + wires, new cap, rotor button, z32 TT fuel filter, clean MAF, AIV, and Throttle body with CARB cleaner, wire your A/C fan to yoru fuel pump fuse and remove your clutch fan, get an ebay short ram intake, upgrade your exhaust if you can afford it, check codes on your car and MAKE SURE it doesn't have any, cut the yellow/green wire on the ECU (removing speed governer), unplug the 4th and 5th gear rev limiters from transmission, get a J30 diff if you can afford it (if not welded diffs work VERY well, I'm pleased and it cost $50 ) and.................that's all I can think of for now.

yeah a welded diff is all fine and good if you want to drive in a straight line all the time.

Miracle, there are many discussions about the pros and cons of the various engine swaps people have put into their s13's. I've personally gone with an SR20DET but now that I look back on it, I should have gone with an RB26DETT. Many are chosing to go with a KA-T or a CA18DET and some have gone to Chevy looking at some big v8's. Search for the details and think hard about what you want in your engine bay and what you can realistically afford. Just keep in mind that an engine swap can have many hidden costs before choosing one that is just within reach of your budget. Plan accordingly.
