sorry if its kinda long this is what happened

well my 96 240 automatic transmission isnt downshifting, this is how it happened, I was making a u-turn gave it 3\4 gas pedal, the open diff fryed the inside tire, i let off at 5k just enought to hear the engine slow down and then i floored it again. ( harsh i know but big cars were coming after waiting 10 mins at this damned light). well after I let off from the tire spin it just bogged, i listened no weird noises, mashed the gas pedal and didnt down shift, just accelerated slooooow, i put it in neutral and it reved and had power. I put it back in D and accereted, still slow. i pulled over checked transmission fluid level is good and the engine oil was good too. I started off on a sideroad in 1, from a stop floored it and it was in second never shifted and reved to 6k@63mph then i put it into d and it went into 3rd, didnt have enough road to wind 3rd out. didnt want to drive it any more and i was home. The torque converter is not slipping, i put it in neutral reved it up 2000 rpms and put it in D and it jerked strong, the fell on its face accelerating like it was in a gear too high. I looked around under the hood and didnt see any vacume lines off or any hoses undone or anything out of place. When i was in 3rd @ 3800rpm i turned off the over drive it didnt change the revs, wether it was on or off.

if your still reading thank you

my automotive knowledge is only internet, but i belive that there might be a problem with the line that supplies the line pressure to the transmission, if it broke/cracked/poped off then the transmission would see atmosphere pressure and not see the load of the engine when i step on the gas, so it wont down shift, just my guess.

Any imput would be greatly appreciated, and sorry if the post is a bit long but i think here are all the facts.

87000 miles on engine and transmission, oil changed 500 miles ago, has been running beautiful, south florida 90 degree weather.

good news, I let it cool down for 5 hours and went back out to see if its still doing it and it shifts fine now, maybe the transmission got too hot and just wasnt functioning properly, well i feel better now that i dont have to get a new transmission even though i would prefer a 5spd. I was driving in traffic stop in go for about 2+hours in the mad heat of south fla, so if this happens to you let the car cool down for a bit it my probs went away.

glad it cleared up. btw the a/t control unit knows engine load by the tps and stuff. we dont have throttle pressure vs. governor pressure anymore. just post again if it comes back.

chris i wasnt sure about wether my transmission used the tps for shifting or not, but in neutral and my car ideled fine and reved fine till 6500, nothing fishy that would have lead me to think it was the tps. but at the time i still had my problem so i thought it used vacume to shift. its all better now, but is that a symptom of a transmission that is too hot, not wanting to shift and acting up like it did?

thanks for the imput

does not sound like a temp charachteristic. could happen though im sure. sounds more like a hydraulic control problem. like a sticking valve or a leaking clutch pack seal.
