After seeing guys post their freeway mileage yesterday with 2.5s in the low 20s, I thought I would post this...cause I just don't get it.

I came back from Los Angeles tonight and kept track of my mileage on the freeway. 24.4 MPG at an average speed of 79.2. So I don't get it. Why are the 2.5s only in the low 20s with freeway MPG? I figured you guys with the 2.5s would be up around 30 MPG!

Course I got no complaints...same MPG and an extra 100 ponies...I'm certainly happy.

This has got to be the thousandth thread on MPG in the coupe.

I get an average of 21.5mpg overall, but that's because I'm stuck in traffic 95% of the time. On a highway when going above 70mph, I get 30+ miles to the gallon.

make that 1001 This is my first post on MPG seeing as how I missed the other 1,000.

And the post yesterday from BlackNWhite was "I averaged about 23.7 mpg and 70.8 mph," so that was over 70.

And, you yourself stated (is that redundant?) in the same thread "I get around 21.5 in the city" and you have the 2.5 also.

So, I figure I'm getting 18 or so hauling a$$ in the city in my 3.5, not bad. And my mileage was actually higher than BlackNWhite's and I was going faster, seems weird to me (and that's with weights in my trunk, hahahaha).

All said it done, it makes me even happier with my 3.5

hey what's good. just bought a 3.5SE AT and lovin the ride. i just used a full tank and got roughly 280 miles, translating to about 14 mpg. seeing as how i don't have bill gates money for gas, i'm just curious if you went through the same problems during the break-in period (i have 1200 miles on it now). Or maybe I should have the dealership check it out? Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

Yes, you're mileage will get better with more miles logged. I have a 3.5 and this last tank I got 23.9 with 3/4 highway driving. I'll usually average about 22mpg with a 50/50 mix.

Your foot and how you drive have a big impact on your mpg. I drive very conservatively in my "Early 02 SE" and average 21mpg with mostly in town driving. I easily return 30 on the highway.

I had an 04 GTO that I got 18 in town and 30 on the highway fully loaded trunk, back seat and 2 men. Others were getting 12 and 20......It all about your foor..Keep it light...I know it's not fun

and yes much agreed wild willy, but i always keep it around 2000 rpm, very rarely hit 3000, and my mileage equates to 14-15 mpg. hopefully it's a break in thing, but thanks for the advice.

damn dude, thats really bad. After going 280 miles are you sure your putting in 20 gallons at the pump? I mean, if you are only getting 14 mpg, and rarely touching 3000 rpms seems to me you got some kinda problem there. I'm doing a hellofa lot better than that and I'm hauling batouttahell butt all over town.

Exactly. I get the same numbers with my 2.5. When the traffic is obscenely bad (like this past christmas rush), I get something around 18mpg. Thats Hawaii roads for ya...pot holes and everything.

Tell me about it. Have you been down Kapiolani during X-mas time? The potholes were about 8-10" deep everywhere. They've since filled them up somewhat, but it still sucks!!

That mileage was with my car fully loaded. I would say over 1,000 lbs of passenger weight. I also hadn't reset the mileage before I set out on my trip so it was taking my prior mileage into consideration.

However, on Christmas I drove from Los Angeles to Oxnard with my myself and my dad and from the gas station to the time I got off the freeway in Oxnard my mpg said 27.8 mpg with an average speed of 70 or so I think.

That's really bad!! Even new, I got about the same mpg as I do now. Maybe you have some other issue going on. I know the newer 3.5 are supposed to be even more fuel efficient. But, Let me tell you..I understand your frustration. We have an 04 Honda Oddy that gets between 9 and 11 mpg all of the time..I have had it in the shop 4 times to address the issue with no luck. Everything always checks out OK

There are a pretty big handful of us that get such mpg.....It may just be you got a pig....As I did with our van

With my 3.5 SE I see a varying degree of mileage. If all I am driving is within the City to and from work I will see it as low as 17.5-18.0 MPG. If it is a descent mix of City / Highway it appears to average between 20-22 MPG. If it is a long distance Highway haul I've seen it get up to 26 MPG. As with anything it all depends on how you drive and where your driving. If all you drive is city and and your flooring it everywhere; even if it's the four banger it's going to get crap mileage!

Wow, some of you guys are getting horrible gas mileage. Do you guys go by what the computer says? And if so, do you reset it at each fill up?

Also remember that tire pressure has a lot to do with gas mileage. Make sure your tires are inflated to the recommended. I run mine at 35psi, 3psi up from the recommended. This last fill up I averaged almost 24mpg, according to my computer and my own calculations. And that's on a 3.5!

I have found that the computer is very accurate if you hop on the highway and do not deviate from it. However, if you mix city driving in the equation the computer tends to be a couple mpg higher than it actually is. Usually 2mpg or so High.

Don't rely on what that trip computer says, there is only one accurate way to calculate mpg....

Now, My GTO..No matter what kind of driving I did that sucker was dead nuts on as far as mpg went.....

I agree that straight highway trips will give you the best possible mpg. Driving cross country in the 3.5 liter G35 I avg. approx 26.5 MPG travelling at speeds averaging 80MPH (gotta love the West Coast speed limits - passing a cop at 80 mph - priceless). I used about 100 gallons coast to coast - or 5 tank fulls.

But wouldnt mixing in city mileage cause the computer to err on the low side. Also what about when you are stopped and the engine is running say at a red light or drive thru- you are getting 0 miles to the gallon at this point. I believe not all computers may factor this in.

I agree, but maybe the car knows that you are getting 0 MPG because you are going 0 MPH?? What I'm saying is that maybe the computer only calculates MPG when MPH are recorded?? If this were the case there would always be some fuel loss that is not calculated.
