I am approaching 24,000km on an 08 S AWD Rogue and have booked an appointment to get the oil changed. The person at Nissan also indicated to me that it needs to have other maintenance performed (brakes checked, engine shampooed, change of air filter and some other things I can't recall off the top of my head). This service is quoted for $380 + tax which I find expensive.

Does anyone know exactly what is performed at the 24,000km interval and if all the maintenance the dealer stated is necessary? I'd like to keep my car for a long time but only want to do the required maintenance only.

Sileung,

Some of those maintenance items are not part of the Nissan's regular scheduled maintenance. The engine shampoo is very suspicious, I have never seen a Nissan dealer offer it and IMHO would avoid it.

You should have a scheduled maintenance manual that came with your vehicle that describes Nissan's (not the dealer's) recommended service. If not, you find the online version here:

Simply input your vehicle and desired mileage.

Thanks Philipa,

I went on the Nissan website and it only mentions the basic maintenance that needs to be performed/parts inspection. I found it odd the dealer was offering these extras. Needless to say, I only had them change my oil.

With that many kilometers (miles) on the car I would also recommend you change the air filter. It is a simple job, just takes a couple minutes, and doesn't require any tools. I would love to see someone shampoo an engine. I wonder if they would also check your relative bearing grease?

I used to do engine de-greasing/cleaning myself. I stopped for a few reasons:

1 - The cleaners used are very nasty. Not only do they damage any paint, coatings, etc, they end up being flushed down the drain/sewer. Not good for the enviornment.2 - High pressure power washing is a very good way to get water into electrical connections... where it shouldn't be!3 - Unless your motor is caked with mud and grease, I do not see the point. Perhaps maybe if you own a show car?

I have also degreased/cleaned engines, but I have never heard it called shampooing before. Maybe it is a local term for the process.

Just went to talk to my dealer also about the Schedule 1, 24000km service and they quoted about the same price ~$350. Two big items, oil change and in-cabin air filter can be done on your own and should save you $180 ($50 for oil change and $130 for in-cabin air filter).

They gave me a print out of what is done, I'll list some here.Engine oil & filterLube locks, latches, hinges, steering stopsRotate tiresService rear brakes.Inspect for fluid leaksAdjust engine drive beltsTest brake & clutch fluidInspect engine air filter, engine coolant and power steering fluid & top-up, tires and tire pressure, fill washer fluid and inspect blades, inspect CV boots, shocks/struts, steering gear and linkage, ball joints, lights, CVT fluid, axle & suspension, battery & terminals, brake pads, rotors, drums & linings, exhaust system, drive shafts & U joints, rear differential oil, transfer case oil, rear differ breather, reset maintenance interval computer

and lastly road test vehicle.

Nothing extraordinary, and largely doable on your own. I'll probably have them do all the inspecting and tire rotation for $150 so I can keep a record they have looked at it. Probably do this annually or every 15 months.
