People have pulled it off with no catastrophic failures, so don't let these points deter you if it's a look you absolutely want. After all 22 isn't too ridiculous & should fit in the wheelwell without body modification. You just can't go too wide.
Hypothetically, you could get some super lightweight 22" wheels whose mounted weight is less than the combined wheel + tire weight of the factory stock setup.
However, the reality is that most upsized wheels
are usually heavier. Less rubber but also way more metal spinning.
Short term effects:
- Harsher ride
- Less responsive handling
- Loss in acceleration
- Immediate decrease in fuel economy
- Vibration/constant shimmy if the wheels aren't the correct spec
Long term:
Accelerated wear of the suspension & steering components
If you do it, remember that lug nuts are determined by the wheels, so get them in the proper type for the wheel & correct thread for the car. If you have a choice, pick something with the correct hub bore.
