Hello!I have been using 10W-30 Mobil 1 in my car for the last year; no complaints except a little bit of engine noise when cool (5 ~ 10 min after starting) - noise would then go away. The car has 104k miles, and my daily commute is short (less than 10 miles each way, up and down a hill). I am thinking of using a "heavier" oil: Valvoline 20W-50. Any advise?

Thank you!

Going to a thicker oil on a higher mile engine is usually a good idea.

Especiall since MOBIL1 30 weights are notoriously thin, even for 30 weights, at operating temps. This oil is a 30 weight yet MUCH thicker than MOBIL1 10w-30 at oprating temps:http://www.nissaninfiniticlub....ber=2

I also like Mobil1 0w-40 quite a bit.

Going to a non synthetic 50 weight is not a great idea with winter starting in washington state.

Some excellent oils for your aplication can be found here:http://www.nissaninfiniticlub....29%2A

Dont forget to check the dates of some of those posts as some info is newer.

Thanks for your prompt response.I forgot to mention that the Valvoline oil I am considering is also synthetic: Synpower. I understand it has excellent detergent characteristics. Considering it is a 20W-50 should be ok with our winter temps (usually above freezing). Correct?

The Synpower does seem to have a better detegergent package wihc is real useful in higher mile engines.

However in a naturally aspirated engine that is not operated in a southern summer I would not go with a 50 weight unless you routinely autocross.

Even with very hard driving among the SynPower line the 5w-40 is likly a better fit for you.
