Hey, im new to the board i have been reading for a while so i pretty well know my stuff. i was wondering when talking to my friend about the benifits of a rotary engine if a rotary swap into a 240 is possible? *specificly a 20B* if anyone has any information i would really apreciate it.

Well theres not point in putting a rotary engine in something that there is already a stock rotary'd car that is very similar;other than being gay.

Sorry I jumped the gun a little...

a 20b never came in an rx-7, it was only in the cosmos. those were never sold state side man, even in an fc or fd, it requires alot of modification to complete that swap. don't see why it wouldn't fit in a 240 but I'd assume it's got alot of work involved probably a bit more work than the 20b into fc install. good luck if you want to do that. But isn't it also a bit sacreligous to install a rotary into something non-rx-7?

dude, If your not going to help, dont even bother posting...

20b-s13: Just about every RWD motor out of japan you can think of has been stuffed in the S13 at one point. Some of the hardest parts of the swap will be custom mounts, exuast , driveshaft, and getting the cosmos engine management to interface with the nissan electrical system properly (or there is always standalone management :) )

I had a pic of a yellow 240 hatch with a 13b in it pushing 600 horse. Some of you may have seen it on here a while back.

Every thing is possible man, go for it. Thats a sweet engnie.

thanks for the response guys. i was just wondering about the possibility of the swap and such. Ghettokracker71, i understand what you are saying about the rx7 its just that i am fond of both cars and would be interested in a hybrid approach and possibly doing something very unique. this may not even be feasible for me to complete in the near future but i want to get a handle on this. i have a teacher who used to have a race engine 13b rx-3 and is very knowladgable about roatries and has himself custom made a 3 rotor engine so i dont think i would atcually be using a sourced 20b from japan. but rather me and him build the engine ourselves. however in any regards the engine upgrade is a long way away. thanks for the input guys

oh by the way i forgot to say, my teacher also owns a 1997 240sx se and i asked him about the possibility of the swap and he said that the biggest things beside the motor and all the trouble of building/aquiring one would be obviously the motor mounts, transmission and having a huge freakin radiator to keep the thing cool.

HAHA what an awesome teacher, my old high school teachers just hassled me about "wasting talent" and sleeping ;p Well if you ever get around to doing it, good luck, I would love to see a rotary powered S13, very unique idea.

did a little bit of research today and found out that an import dealer that i did not even know about is only 20 miles away from my house. so i called them up and asked about a 20b engine and they said that it would take a 50% down payment and the engine would take 6-8 weeks to arive and it costs $3350 which is about how much i would of ended up paying for a full sr20 swap. however the bad news is that this is just the engine and does not include a transmission or anything like that so the challenge now presents itself in finding the transmission and getting all the fab work done. i was reading up and it seems that one of the most popular transmission's for an FC is the ford T-5 transmission found in the mustang so it looks like with a little bit more research on other transmissions it's gonna be time to hit up the junk yards to make this little frankenstein work...

*wish me luck:) *

that's very cool you're considering this. I would assume the swap would be easier than the fc swap given that the fc's engine bay is very small. I would look at this thread http://www.teamfc3s.org/forum/...y+20b and contact the guy doing it.

For the price, and just suggesting, why not go w/an ls1 swap? It'll end up being lighter, and I think Aries already makes the mounts.

BTW, keep up the good work and don't listen to ***holes who disagree..

would you be keeping the powerplant frame? the eninge mounts are on the bottom going rearwards. so if you made a cross member the went aross the back of the eninge bay you could mount it there. the rx7 has like a cradel around the bottom of the enigne.

I've seen an sr20 put into an FD...in fact someone on these forums has it...(or said he bought if from the guy off ebay) I looked at the pictures that were provided and they all looked legit. But I think putting a rotary in a 240 is just a waste of time...rotaries aren't the best engines in the world afterall...take it from me, I worked for mazda.

of course they're not, but if he can get a good deal, it's hard to beat the potential and "cool" factor :)

heh, rotary engines... the one type of engine that once tempted me from my nissan purity. i am still all nissan all the time but rotary engines are cool. i would never invest in something so fragile as a rotary, but i just love the way they work. man if someone with some sense(like nissan had in the late 80's early 90's) would build rotarys, they could be a serious force.

rotaries are not fragile....(well not that fragile)...it's just the way that ppl took care of them (or didn't) that shortened their life. I see several nice rebuilts that would last a life time, but since their owners are boost crazy (seriously, t-60 is the norm), they do tend to go through them kinda fast. However, w/such abuse i've seen them last on average around 60k miles. The fd however is another story, due to some heating problems and the whole tt layout. Now the 13bre (cosmo tt engine) and this 20b (also cosmo tt i think) are robusts beasts.

after doing more research i am not particuarly sure how i am going to do this swap i have found out that the 13b rotars from a turbo 2 fc have the same compression ratio *dont have the number off the top of my head* but if i could come upon 1 and a half turbo 2 engines i could make my own 3 rotar engine very easily but then i would have to figure you the wiring and ignition not to mention should i go twin turbo or make it single (also i hear stories of people droping the twins from a 20b and pushing 500 horsepower with little modification) well its back to more research. if anyone has any suggestions about how to fabricate or mount this engine that would be very usefull seeing as that is where i lack the most

thanks guys

the idea of making a 3 rotor engine is not new, however, the biggest problem ppl run into is the eccentric shaft (equivalent of crankshaft) because there's no 3 rotor eccentric shaft (except the 20b's) but even then, who knows if that works in a custom made car. Timing is a big issue as well.

i guess my point is that the rotary engine concept is nowhere near fully developed. maybe i would be kinder if nissan made one(still).

well you could put 20b into a nissan, it'd be easier to put it into an rx but whatever, you like the challenge. saw a video of a 20b in an ae86, that was rather interesting. i dont think you even understand how much putting a 20b into an rx-7 costs. im not trying to be a d!ck, but i just dont see it happening. proove me wrong and be the man. or you could do something truly unique, and compete with ferrari's on their level. get a 26b, leave it natrually aspirated, get it ported nicely, and put a nice exhaust on it. it makes just as much sense as putting in a 3 rotor since the price of both will be equally as lavish. as i said, be rich and be the man

yeah i am starting to come to that conclusion my budget is somewhere around 10k for everything to be finished if this doesnt work out i'll just say forget it and do a nice sr20 build up

but untill it comes time i'm hoping this will work out
