The VR35DDTT in the new Y63 Armada/Patrol is a gasoline direct injection (GDI) setup. There is no shortage of internet discussion promoting adding a catch can to GDI engines. However, since intake valve deposits in GDI setups is a well known issue in automotive manufacturing circles, is anyone aware if the new VR35DDTT found in the Y63 has any mitigating factors engineered into it? If not, can anyone suggest an aftermarket catch can addition?

Reached out to the dealership about this matter and was informed that Nissan does not manufacture a catch can for the VR35DDTT. Was somewhat surprised given that it is based off the GTR motor. They suggested Z1 as a possible source for a catch can while also stating that installation of one would void the warranty.

It (or any other performance part) can only void the warranty if it provably contributes to a failure. E.g., if a pump failure causes an overheat, they can't blame the catch can. It doesn't void the warranty on the whole vehicle, or even the whole engine.

Any idea where that might be documented? I am just relaying what the dealership communicated to me. I would rather not roll the dice with an 80,000 vehicle. Research suggests it could benefit from a catch can, and I'd even proposed a dealer install if they would oblige (not sure about that), but not at the expense of a battle with Nissan over any potential future fixes.

Dealerships are always going to tell you that, but as a legal matter, Nissan can't penalize you for a harmless (or in this case even beneficial) add-on. If it goes to court, the burden of proving the modification caused harm will be on Nissan. I've seen it several times, for instance, with CVT's using fluids other than NS3 . Nissan knows they'll lose and ends up paying for the transmission as long as the customer doesn't back down. The warranty documentation is the wrong place to inquire, ask your lawyer.

Has anyone used CRC GDI IVD Intake Valve & Turbo Cleaner and can attest to the results -- good or bad?

The VR35DDTT does have some valve cleaning tech built in, like higher fuel pressure and port injection overlap, but it’s not foolproof. If you’re planning long-term use or towing heavy, a catch can won’t hurt—just make sure it’s a high-quality one with proper baffling.

Any experience with a particular brand or two that you might recommend for this fitment?
