Our CVT is being replaced at 49,317 miles. Had the transmission fluid replaced at about 25,000 miles. Immediately heard a rubbing/fluttering noise at 20-25 mph on our drive home. Thought maybe the aero skirt was flapping or rubbing. Next oil change, mentioned it to service guy, who attributed it to door seals or something. Forward to 49,317 and I asked to have the transmission fluid changed. Mention to service guy about the rubbing sound. He drives it and says it sounds rotational. Car disappears for 3 hours and then they come out and say they have to keep it, the transmission needs to be replaced, Here is your rental car. It is under warranty. No more detail than that.
I am suspicious that something may have gone wrong during first fluid change. Will be dumping the car once it is repaired. Don’t feel like we can trust it.

They probably overfilled it. Overfilling is a CVT death sentence, it foams the fluid and causes hot-spots on the belt and rapid fluid oxidation. I've seen a 1-quart overfill literally destroy an RE10 series trans in under 1000 miles.

I can't blame you for not trusting it, but we really haven't seen a lot of problems with the GE series trannies on the gen3 Rogues. The major issues have all been with the VC engine. It's a little ironic (and a sad joke amongst us technicians) that they finally got the bugs out of the CVT's and then coupled them to an inadequately-vetted powerplant.

When the service guy came out and gave me the bad news, I said, “Well, the engine is going to grenade, should I just run it and see which blows first?”. I did a lot of research before committing to the new technology. Sad that having the transmission fluid changed may have contributed to its demise. If it was just about the CVT, we would keep it. But with potential engine issues looming, I can’t trust having my wife and grandkids traveling in it. Now, I just have to hope I can make it to the Toyota dealer before the engine dies. Thank you for your input!

Go up one step and getcha a Pathfinder. The R53's are a nice piece and so far all the common bugs have been in the tech packages, not the drivetrain.

sad story :(
on a good side (if I understood correctly) - warranty takes care of the car and provides loaner.

p.s. I wouldn't hold my hopes about toyotas - https://pressroom.toyota.com/toyota-rec ... -vehicles/ - if they can't even make brand new engines......
