Yesterday I got the "AWD warning" message and the solid dashboard icon light. This occurred after driving for perhaps 10 or 15 minutes. Weather was 55 degrees and raining. It went away after stopping the vehicle and then restarting maybe 5 minutes later. Will a scan tool give me the diagnostic code for this? Any likely suspects? Tires are regularly rotated (5,000 mile intervals), so I don't think it's tire size related. Thanks.

Not a cheap one. The AWD Controller is on the CANbus but it isn't OBD-II, so basic scanners won't read it. Takes something higher-end like a good shop scanner. It's also possible the tranny coded and not the AWD, if you have a CVT app like CVTz50 you can use that to see if the tranny was the real culprit.

When the code showed, I switched the instrument cluster to show the power distribution (the AWD screen). Nothing was going to the rear.

That's limp behavior, I'm sure. The only question is which controller was limp. Stuff like glitchy speed sensors can cause limps all over the car even though it still seems to run normally. Killing the AWD and defaulting to FWD is predictable for codes like that. Or it could be something more serious. Getting a complete scan will tell you.
