Today, I tried out my new ramps. I was shocked to see the level of rust for a car that we have only owned for 3.5 years. Also, it was just at the dealership for an oil change, and they never mentioned the transfer case leak. However, I am more concerned with the rust. At that rate, it might not last until it is paid off in 2.5 years. If there is nothing Nissan will or can do, I thought about trying to grind the rust off. But, the rust looks pretty bad. Maybe, I could have it sandblasted. Is anyone else dealing with this level of rust? I have never seen this for a car so new. My Corolla only had very minor surface rust from paint chips after 20 years.

Wow.

A few questions come to mind: Where are you located? Is rustproofing the undercarriage a common thing where you live?

Sandblasting is only effective if you're disassembling the car completely - otherwise, send goes where you don't want it. Grinding simply removes the evidence, leaving less metal (and exposed metal that will rust again, but more quickly). Remember, for every square inch of corrosion you can see, two exist where you can't.

How does the body look (such as inside the rear wheelwells)?

I suspect, if you live someplace where they use urea and/or salt on the roads, Nissan will simply say you didn't maintain it sufficiently. There may be an "outer body rust-through" provision in your warranty, but the body may not be rusting.

I’m no expert, but I use rust to my advantage.

I personally use rust convertor to make it into a black primer.

My 2009 is not so bad. But I use liquid and spray convertor.

I try to get all the rust spots and larger under my vehicle.

Even did the rear axle rods which are now primer black since it had rust from end to end.

Nothing close to rusting through anything, and the normal rust near the brake components that’s usually there and other odd and end stuff I’m not to worried about. :woot:

I haven't noticed any rust on my 2008 but then again I live in Southern California.

That could be the reason :) But, you are stuck paying a crazy amount for your registration like Colorado.

I have a 2016 murano purchased new with 40 000 mi. It has more undercarriage and exhaust system rust than my old 2005 ford focus used in the same location. I have also had a coil spring rust through to a complete failure. Nissans seem to use poor quality parts and steel. No more Nissans for me

Interesting. There's only like 3 places in the world that make coil spring material, so I'm not so sure you can blame that.

If you have a coil spring rust completely through on a 2016, I'd be real skeptical of how it was maintained. I'd also wonder why no preventative measures were taken, considering your awareness of the potential for salt damage.

I actually think the opposite of Nissan compared to the big 3. My northern ohio 09 Altima is rust free, body panel wise. I had an 08 impala that you could hear it rusting in the garage. The underneath of my wife’s 18 has some surface rust here and there but nothing that scares me structurally.
