I am wondering if I am seeing possible starting signs of timing chain issues. This morning I went out and started my maxima and upon startup there was a rattle that lasted maybe 5-10 secs and went away. Starting it again throughout the day the rattle hasn't came back.

I'll upload a video to vimeo of it idleing. I don't know if I'm hearing timing chain noise while at idling or if it's just the noisey 3.5L VQ. It seems to be running ok with no codes or check engine light. I'll also try to get a video of the rattle from a cold start of overnight sitting and see if it returns.

Maxima has 133,149 miles and no major issues outside of replacing CV axles and Wheel Bearing Assemblys but I do have a weird issue of my back passenger floorboard being wet even on dry days. The loud noise is the electric steering pump that nissan said is normal. Seems abnormally loud to me but whatever.

What brand and weight oil are you using?

I have ran Amsoil 0W-20 with NAPA Platinum Oil filters since it was brand new changing usually every 7-8k miles. Also I only heard the rattle on cold start 2 times. It hasn't done the rattle on cold start anymore.

Welcome to Nico! :yesnod..

BTW I suspect the noise may be related to a cold start in the winter.
I am unaware of any timing chain issues in 2017 VQs ( even the "susceptible" model years.. it was still fairly rare magnified by forums perhaps)

How many miles on the 17 Max?

Why do you need a 0w 20 do you live in cold climes most of the year? Is that a requirement for the 17 Max? IMO to light at the hot end. Why not 0w 30 that covers a wide temp range and a bit thicker at the low end and hot end. Certainly would help the timing change rattle as they age even though you say rattle gone.

Amsoil data:

https://www.amsoil.com/lit/databulletins/g2880.pdf

Signature series Viscosity
Oil weight, Viscosity @ 40C 100C, Viscosity Index, Pour Point
0W20 ..................... 47.. 8.8 ..........169 ........ -53C
0W30 ..................... 57..10.4..........173 ........ -50C

Both have good viscosity index and pour point #'s

I live in Orlando Fl and run 10W 30 mineral in the Infinity it has 168K and lifters, chain still quite as a mouse.

0-20W is just what is called for by Nissan in the owners manual. Tn is cold but not that cold. Also the max has 135,800 miles so far.

Do doubt 0W20 just to increase their CAFE fuel economy #'s with lower cold and hot viscosity. That's a lot of miles for a 2017 what do you do for such high miles in 3 years? Does your engine consume any oil between changes or leak any ?

I have a 120 mile round trip 5 days a week for work. No leaks of any kind and it's never even been a 1/4 quart low anytime I have checked or changed the oil.

Other than the little noise you're hearing, how happy have you been with your Maxima? I'm looking at a 2017 Platinum now. Love the car (not necessarily the price) and would love to hear more details about your experience. I drive 60miles round trip to work (exactly half your distance) 5 days a week. And I will take it on some long distance trips as well. So comfort and reliability are especially high on my priority list. How happy have you been?
Thanks!

I'm at 138,000 with no major issues outside of some rattles etc. Overall has been really reliable. Cvt is always a concern but seems like if you change the CVT fluid at least every 60k it helps with durability. It was always super smooth up to around 100k then started getting some noticeable vibration of unknown origin.

I've checked mounts, suspension , new tires, balance and alignment. No success so just attributing to having 100k+ miles.
