I have a 2016 Rogue SV with the intelligent key system. I do not have the optional power lift gate option. My vehicle has lock/unlock request buttons on the passenger and driver side doors. They work just fine. There is also a little rubber button next to the lift gate opener button (on the actual liftgate). Is this also an intelligent key lock/unlock request switch? At present, this button doesn't seam to do anything even with the fob nearby.

If yes, is there anything obvious I could check to see why it's not working?

If no, why does my car have a button on it that does nothing?

Thanks in advance.

On mine, a 2015 SL with the powered lift gate, that little button lets you relock the car after the tailgate lowers back into place.

Maybe they put it there just to drive you nuts?

As Big Red Rogue said, it is to lock the car.

There are two buttons, a rectangular button on left to open the hatch and a circular button on the right to lock or unlock the vehicle. The circular button should work similar to the door handle buttons. Make sure all doors and hatch are closed when you try to lock or unlock using the hatch button.

I took it to the dealership and they told me this button only works if I have the power liftgate. I don’t believe them.

Are you 100% sure that the button doesn't have any function to it on your Rogue? Probably, its time for you to route that button to make it to lock/unlock the car. And its probably ideal to ask Nissan USA or Nissan Canada (depending on which country you live in) and they will have a better explanation of that. I have the SL trim, so that button does what its supposed to do: lock/unlock the car.

If the little rubber button in question looks the same as the intelli key buttons on your front doors then that must be what it is.
My 2011 does not have a power lift gate but is does have an intelli button right over the camera and latch, and it works. If you’re still under warranty get it fixed, don’t talk to a sales person talk to someone who actually works on the cars.

Is it possible that switch is deactivated? Looking through the 2016 User Manual, the section about the Intelligent Key references an "I-Key Door Lock Setting" that is accessed through the Vehicle Information Display. Looking at that section of the Manual (pg 2-24) there is a table that shows a "Locking" menu with settings for I-Key Door Lock and Selective Unlock. I have a 2008 with Intelligent Key and can definitely lock/unlock the vehicle via the button on the back hatch. But the early models didn't have power lift gate or all the settings in the Vehicle Info Display, so I'm not sure how those work.

One other thing I have observed, though, is that when I use the lock/unlock button on the back hatch, I often can not hear (or can barely hear) the confirmation chirp (which seems to emanate from the front end), so if I didn't otherwise know that it works, it might sound like it wasn't.

Just one question is the master switch for the liftgate inside the cabin on or off? If its off that may be your problem. Make sure that switch is on. The round button is a door unlock/lock button. It was on my 2015 sl awd rogue and it worked all the time with the intelli key present. There is no setting just for that one button.

THANKS everyone for your responses. I opened a case with Nissan consumer affairs and they confirmed what you all are telling me. The button should unlock my car. I took it back to the dealership that told me there was no issue and they resolved the problem. The technician that resolved the problem told me I had a bad sensor of some kind inside of my brake system that caused a failure in the intelligent key system. I didn’t bother trying to wrap my head around that. Thanks everyone for chiming in on this.
