Helping a friend by servicing the car w/ oil change. The oil has not been changed in a very long time (50K). Oh my! It seems the mileage counters are not working. All are zeroed out. Any ideas?

Ok, since it has been a while I posted this question, I will share my solution/story. There was a battery terminal corrosion issue with my car resulting in battery passing in weaker power, which eventually led to a power shortage. So if you are experiencing this issue, I would check if your battery is generating enough power for your vehicle. Since my vehicle was still covered under the warranty, I brought the car into the dealership and they cleaned up the battery terminal. And then they completely disconnected the battery from my car and left it there for a good one hour. The system reset itself after connecting the battery and has been working fine ever since.
Take a moment to read this topic that was just posted, as it relates to the quoted answer:
Keep your engine on the ground, not just the wheels!

If you're talking about just the Oil and Tire Maintenance screen on the center information display, that is just a countdown that can be manually reset back to a specified number at any time. Default is 5,000 or maybe 6,000. I can't remember. It counts down from that number to 0.00 from the last time it was reset. If this car has truly never seen an oil change (YIKES!!) then it probably has never been reset, so 0 being on the display would be expected. It likely has been at 0 since it hit 5,000 on the ODO.

If you are talking about the ODO and/or the TRIP1 or TRIP2 reading 0 miles on the engine, that's an entirely different problem.

Thank you “Rogue One” and “Lone Wolff” for your responses. Much appreciated. I think we found the issue and resolved it.

Using the Oil change indicator for example, there are two mileage fields, the accumulated count, and the mileage limit. For example, a car with 100 miles into a 6000-mile oil change would be displayed like so: 100 / 6000.

As you probably know, the mileage limit can be adjusted up or down as desired. Unfortunately for my unsuspecting friend, the mileage limit was set to zero.

The display looked like _ _ _ _ / _ _ _ _.

Effectively, this disables the service indications. They will never trigger oil change service needed. My friend drove the car and never was flagged to change the oil (yes yes, I know. A gracious lecture was provided).

After putting a value in the mileage limit (for the right hand field), things seem to be working properly.

It’s nice that Nissan gave the flexibility to change the mileage limit. However, they have given their customers enough rope to hang themselves unfortunately.

Anyway, for what it’s worth, here is what we did to deal with 50,000 mile old motor oil.
1) Drained the oil (thankfully, it did “drain”, but was a bit sluggish).
2) Replaced the oil filter and put in the most inexpensive 5/20W oil we could find, along with the controversial STP engine flush.
3) Ran the car for 10min
4) Drained the oil
5) Replaced the oil filter again and refilled w/ Mobil 1 0-20W full synthetic
6) Set the oil change indicator to 1,000 miles.

Our plan is to use STP engine flush for this next short cycle oil change in 1,000 miles.

Oh my.

Thanks for the update!

It never occurred to me that the oil change indicator would be set to zero. That shouldn't even be allowable, but I guess whomever design the program thought they were being helpful in creating a way to let people turn the reminder off if they didn't want to use it.

I think it is considerate, and useful. I prefer a window sticker, and for me the reminder is completely extraneous. Gonna see right now if the "magic zero" works on our Altima.

Well, it doesn't have a "zero" selection but it does have a "---". I'm presuming that will disable it.

Thanks for the correction to my bad info on my reply. I was confusing it with my wife's previous car. Since our Rogue is my wife's daily driver, my experience with that maint screen is usually just resetting it each time. Plus my memory isn't what it used to be, so I hope I didn't confuse anyone too much reading my reply.

Hopefully things work out for you and no serious damage was done to the engine.
