I noticed while underneath the SUV that there are black plastic shields on either side of the engine- one partially covering the oil filter and the other near the CV joint on the opposite side. These just seem to partially flap around, is this how they were attached from the factory, or am I missing something?

Thanks, george in Tallahassee

Should I remove the one kinda of covering the oil filter or just bend it out of the way?

Why do you need to "bend it out of the way?"

Although I have not changed the oil yet, it sure appeared to me that it needs to be bent out of the way in order to get a good grip on the filter. SOmeone else posted that they partially loosen this panel when they do it but that it was possible to remove the filter w/out taking it off. BUT, now my question is the washer- I have not had to fool w/a washer on a drain plug for ages, but this new Rogue used one........I've usually be able to reuse them a few times, is that still the case, and, WHERE to get them other than the dealer?

Hey guys and gals, help me out here, is my Rogue missing a fastener on those plastic panels that partially shield the oil filer, or are they designed to kind of flap from side to side?

Also, do I need to change the washer on the drain plug every oil change?

Yes, I had watched one similar and read another, the key questions I had were is it necessary to remove the plastic shield- evidently not according to the video, but I'm really curious about the drain plug washer. I
have not had to replace one for YEARS- think VW Bug! Is it necessary to replace that washer each time on the late model ROGUES?

Do yourself a favor and read through this thread CHATROOM: Engine Oil & Filter (schedule, type, etc). There's info in there that will apply to both Rogue versions.

The drain plug washer is dirt cheap. Honestly, what's the big deal about replacing it?

OK, got another take on WHY Nissan required the use of a crush washer on the oil pan of my 2015 Rogue. The fellow I was talking with thought it was due to the EPA mandates on MPG- figuring that they have reduced the thickness thus strength of the oil pan so one cannot crank down on it as hard w/out stripping it. Sounds fairly reasonable to me...............

When I change oil I use a zip tie to hold the shield out of the way. You don't really have to replace the washer each time. I've only done it a few times and I have a 2008. I try to check the drain plug for leaks a couple hours after just to make sure I got it tight enough. That said, the washers are pretty cheap and so I added some to my cart when I recently had to buy some new rear hatch struts from Everything Nissan. Figured I was paying for shipping anyway.
