So I have about 6k miles now. I drive mostly on the turnpike/highway and I have a heavy foot some might call. I have noticed that when I hit 90mph the rpms go crazy. It almosts reminds me of someone first learning to drive a manual with the jerkiness. If I give it a little more gas, it does go away. Has anyone else noticed this? I do not need an answer like, "slow down" etc, Im looking for technical help not a mother. I am trying to record a video when it happens but it does not last long, just a few seconds. :wtf2:

Not sure, but it could be some kind of speed limiter. Sometimes automakers will do something to indicate you shouldn't go faster (often has to do with the speed rating of original equipment tires). Giving it more gas would be a kind of safety feature for passing a semi, etc.

Does it come in at a very specific speed?

No, I first noticed it when I hit 90. The second time I noticed it was when I hit a little over 95. I was thinking a limiter, but the rpms are not even to 3k. It seems like if I am keeping steady at 90-95, that is when it occurs. It is like I can not keep high speed for a duration or it flutters. I contacted the dealership and they said that they did not know and could not really test it since it is above the speed limit. I think thats not a good reason as they should be able to dyno it and figure out what is going on. I also didnt know if it was something with the transmission like at that speed it doesnt know if it should down shift or up shift?

Is this in standard mode? If so have you tried in sport or economy mode? If it goes away in another mode that may implicate the software that drives the transmission.

I have not tried it in any mode besides standard. I will give it a try in sport mode and see if it still does it. A friend of mine said that maybe the mapping is off since it is a new vehicle. Im not a mechanic so he lost me when he started to talk about that. I assume mapping is the same as the software programming. So no one else has had this happen to them while driving?

This is purely a guess since I am not a mechanic and everything I know about CVTs came from the internet. I'm thinking that maybe once you get up to that speed, you have "maxed out" the gearing ratios so that the only way the vehicle can increase speed is by increasing the engine RPMs. So maybe when it thinks it needs more power and cannot get it from the transmission, it "downshifts" and kicks the RPMs way up (like passing gear does on a traditional transmission)? Or if you have AWD, maybe it is switching to a mode that sends less power to the rear wheels and that causes a little stutter? I'd also like to see a video, mostly because I haven't ever had a road that would even let me get up that fast :)

i've had it to 120mph, and trust me.... it was not "maxed out" lolol

{ps: i race sportbikes at various motogp style racetracks, and had a chance to take my car on the track for a few fun-runs. this was not on the street}

Both of my Rogue's have seen the north side of 100 with no problem. Granted they were both first gen's, but AFAIK there's no limiter/governor on these vehicles. After all, Nissan assumes were not crazy enough to try that, right? :crazy:

2015 still under full factory warranty. Take it back and get the dealership to sort it out.

every car has a fuel cut-off, torque limiter, etc. its usually 25-35mph below the max.

i have maxed out a 2000 crown vic (P71), which states it can do 140, but it topped out at 115-120ish if i remember correctly. (which is cowardly for a v8 patrol car if you ask me lol)

I thought new cars were required to be speed limited according to the speed rating of the tires they were equipped with. I know this was true back in 1995 when I bought a new Camaro Z28 with optional Goodyear Eagle Z rated tires. It was ungoverned. Z cars with standard S or V rated tires were speed limited to about 128 mph.

Im trying to upload a video but the last one I took was over 20mb. I will take another video and try to make it lower resolution. I did try in sport mode and eco mode, same thing when I reached 90ish. It does go over 100 but it just goes crazy when cruising around 90. Im going to dealership I think even though they are gonna think I am crazy.

I know that when I go hard on the gas pedal the rpm goes up till 3000rpm stutter for about 2 seconds and go up till 4000rpm and to the same thing...stuttering during hard acceleration. The dealer told me its normal because the cvt is "analyzing" the acceleration. I plan on bringing it up again during my next oil change.

Mine does it while I am cruising at the speed, if I accelerate, it jumps up but it doesnt shutter. Does yours occur at all speeds or is it a certain speed like mine? Curious if others are having the same thing happen at the same speed or if it is different.

Mine has to do more with rpm's since no matter what speed If I hit the gas hard enough to hit 3000 or 4000 rpms it stutters for a couple of seconds.

I have a 2011 Rogue with the same shutter issue and am having a hard time finding a solution. I plan on taking it to the dealership this week. Will post my findings.
