2015 QX50 AWD Journey - Front Sensor

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

Hello:

I have a fully loaded 2015 QX50 AWD Journey model that was in a rear-end collision. The work on the read-end was fairly extensive but there was no significant damage to the structure, sides or front.

The cars now been fixed at an Infiniti dealership and work done by Infiniti certified body shop. However, one thing that I noticed immediately was that when the front sensors are very close to an obstacle, there is no beeping sound and the camera view does not come on automatically.

If I hit the camera button on the dash then the camera view comes on indicates through colored zones where the obstacle is and there is immediate beeping noise while at the same distance from the obstacle. That seems to defeat the purpose of the front sensors that there is no beeping or the camera will not come on to warn the driver till I hit the camera button. However, the Infiniti tech people are insisting that's how the 2015 QX50 works.

If you have a 2015 QX50 with Around View Monitor and Front and Rear Sonar System, would really appreciate your sharing how the feature works on your car. That is if you drive the car close to an obstacle near the front bumper:
1) Does it beep?
2) Does the Around View Monitor automatically come on and show where you are close to hitting the obstacle through blinking green, yellow or red zones on the monitor display?
3) Or neither 1 or 2 above happens till you hit the Camera button on the dash?

Thank you for your help.

That is how mine works and that is how the owner's manual specifies that it works. The camera and sensors only come on automatically when you are in reverse. In other gears, you have to press the camera button.

This is copied from the owner's manual:

"With the ignition switch in the ON position,
press the CAMERA button or move the shift
lever to the “R” (Reverse) position to
operate the Around View Monitor. The
monitor displays various views of the
position of the vehicle."

"When the corner of the vehicle moves
closer to the object while the Around View
Monitor is displayed, an indicator is displayed
and a tone is sounded by the corner
sonar function to warn the driver."

Can definitely concur - had the pants of the family run around the car because she thought it would be funny: much beeping, so camera, very surprise.

@jakenbake and @nerd thank you for your confirming with your responses that the AVM does not automatically come on when approaching an obstacle. Much appreciated. Sorry for my own delayed response.

One more question, this is about the just the sonar sensor not about the AVM. Driving in to a tight spot, say at a parking structure where large pillars are all around. When the corner front sensor comes too close to a pillar or any other solid structure, I expect the car would provide audible feedback by beeping so you know you are about to hit the structure.

This car is not doing that. That seems to be counterintuitive that a corner sensor would not warn a driver when the car is about to come in contact with an obstacle. I understand that will not happen at high speed, however that it would not do so at low speeds like inside a parking structure seems to defeat the purpose of buying a car with corner sonar sensors.

If one of you or someone with the same car would please confirm how the car functions in this scenario, I would really appreciate that.

Thanks again.

It is one of the settings. You can turn the beep on and off. I believe their is even a button on the screen when the camera is on that says "beep". Also, you can adjust the sensitivity of the sensors in the settings.

@jakenbake thank you for the response. Assuming you mean Sonar Beep in the first picture and Corner Sonar Sensitivity in the second picture. As you can see Sonar Beep is on and Corner Sundar Sensitivity is at the highest settings.

Still no beep when I am about to hit an obstacle while turning or driving forward at crawl speed. It would be great if you can please confirm your car does beep when about to hit an obstacle when turning or driving at crawl speed. I am frustrated with how the Nissan dealership is treating me on this and need some confirmation to at least take car back and show them something to try to get this fixed.

Thank you.

Just to be clear...You know that it only beeps when the camera is on or in reverse? If you are driving forward with the camera off, it will not beep. I will take some pictures this weekend and post them monday.

I didn't know that. Looking forward to the pictures.

I have to say, it seems to defeat the purpose of having a sonar corner sensor if the car is not going to warn the driver unless the camera is turned on. Specially for a 2015 model car. :)

Thanks again.

I disagree about the sensors. Before this car I had a Lexus and the sensors were on anytime the vehicle speed was slow and anytime I would go through a drive through or a car wash the sensors would beep and beep and beep because they could sense the building or the brushes. It was sooo annoying. At least this car, they only are on when you need them and they come on with the touch of a button. Plus I almost only use them in reverse or when parallel parking. I almost never use them when driving forward.

But here is a link to a youtube video of the sensors working. https://youtu.be/TIiApLnOiqg

thanks for the video @jakenbake. understand the point you are making. i rarely do drive throughs, so that has not been an issue for me. i also hand wash so that has not been an issue either. but i would take those inconvenience over having the front corner sensor working full-time because i often need to park in the city in tight spots and it would be very helpful to have the sensors on without remembering to turn the camera on, on a daily basis.

btw, if you like the way it's working now, you shouldn't buy the the 2016 version of this car. the sensors now work full-time and it only requires a software update for infiniti to make this change.

thanks again for all of the information you have shared, it's been very helpful.
