I am leasing a 2015 Nissan Rogue AWD,SL. It has 36,111 miles (so just out of my 36,000 warranty) I have brought it in 3 times because my AWD lock light comes on and eventually then it tells me to pull over because my car is overheating. The dealership could not ever re-create the problem. This 3rd time it's out of warranty, but they told me the Rear End Differential was making a noise and they are going to replace it under the warranty.
My question is this. my rear brake pads (during my 2nd visit for this problem) show a level 3 and my front show a level 7. Is this related to my Rear End Differential?? I also had to replace about 2 months ago my back tires because they wore out faster than my front. (although we put the worn front ones on the back and the brand new ones on the front)
I didn't get a lease so I could pay for new tires and brake pads.....so I'm just wondering if any of this rear end diff or AWD Lock light being stuck on--problem created brake or tire problems??

I do plan on asking the dealership when I pick up my car, but I am writing here to get a first opinion!
Thanks
Melissa

Hi Melissa, welcome to NICO.
Glad to hear the dealer is doing the right thing and replacing the differential under warranty.
I'm not sure what you mean by saying "level 3" and "level 7" on the brake pads, but I'm assuming you mean the rears are worn significantly more than the front. I'm not exactly sure how the Rogue's ABS system works, but one way a rear differential can fail is by essentially locking/synchronizing the 2 rear wheels. That would cause issues during tight turning maneuvers, which could cause the ABS to apply the brakes on one of the wheels to try to smooth things out. Its a stretch, but its certainly possible.
The same issue would cause excessive tire wear for the rear of the vehicle. 36,000 is right around the time for replacing tires and such anyway though. If they don't want to cover that as a result of the failed differential, I would suggest taking the vehicle to a private mechanic instead of the dealer, as they will most assuredly be cheaper.
Let us know how you make out!

Not a Rogue, but on the Muranos I've owned, the rear pads actually wore out before the fronts because they're a lot smaller pad. Doubtful that it's related to your diff issues.

Pads are cheap. got some wrenches laying around? Stuffing new brake pads is about an hour job per axle for a novice.

The rear end problem is probably related to your AWD problem. However the brakes and tires, not so much. Depending on the tires and where and how you drive they could well have reached the end of their serviceable life. Rear brake pads wearing out, well that seems a little soon, I still have the original rear pads and rotors on my 11 at 77k miles. I did replace the fronts at about 36k, but the rotors were warped, I don’t remember how the pads looked I just replaced them anyway.

Pads and rotors are easy to change but you do need some basic tools and a place to work. As far as a warranty covering pads and tires, I believe they are called “wear items” and are not covered.

I forgot to ask can you explain level 3 and level 7? I know that pads are measured, as in 3mm or 7mm of serviceable thickness remaining. Is that what the dealer is talking about?
