Last night I was visiting friends, showing off my one week old 2014 Rogue SV. After starting the car to leave, the security system warning light was on. This morning, the car would not start. I pushed the start button, and the only sound was a clicking sound like the starter solenoid. The starter did not engage. I checked the battery voltage--it was 10.5 V at "rest", and dropped to about 9.5 V when the start button was pushed. I could not find much information in the owner's manual, other than if the security system light is on and the car will not start, have your Nissan dealer check the immobilizer system. I have an appointment Monday morning to have the car towed to the dealer. (I am in the process of moving and I don't have an easy way to jump or charge the battery.) Does anyone know if the weak battery is a symptom that caused the security system light to go on, or might there really be something wrong with the security system that is draining the battery? I don't want the dealer to simply tell me the battery is bad and needs to be replaced if there is an underlying cause for the battery being drained. If anyone has any thoughts or ideas, I would like to hear them. Thanks

Welcome, and sorry about your brand new car.
Exactly what light was on?
Something open like a rear hatch might drain the battery and also show as a problem with the security system.
Obviously you will need to get the battery charged and tested, and go from there.

Thanks for the reply.
It's the "Security indicator light". It's red in the shape of a car with a key through the middle. When the ignition is off, it blinks to indicate the security system is operational. In my case, the engine was running. The owner's manual says that if the light stays on with the ignition "on", the Vehicle Immobilizer System is malfunctioning and should be checked as soon as possible.
One other tidbit. When I picked up the car, the dealer didn't say anything about this, but when I got home and lifted the hood to check the fluids, I noticed that the red cover on the positive battery terminal was open. I suspect they had to jump the car to get it started (the door tag says it was manufactured 5/2014, so I suppose the car could have been sitting on their lot for a couple of months without being started).
When I checked the battery voltage today, it was holding at 10.5 volts, so whatever caused the original drain must not be doing so now. I didn't notice any of the doors ajar, but it won't be the first time I've not closed a door all the way :)
I'm hoping it's just a bad battery, but I'll post whatever diagnosis I get from the dealer tomorrow.

Is the Immobilizer light working correctly now?
10.5 is very low for a normal open circuit voltage.
If you walk out to your car in the morning and open the hood, your battery should be in the 12.4-12.6V range at least.
You are probably right that your car has been jump started at some point, maybe more than once. Done incorrectly, jump starting can damage things but luckily most folks get it right.
The condition of your battery must be verified before anything, but if its OK, something is pulling down the battery.
I'm hoping for a bad battery, it does happen.
Good luck

Yes, with the ignition off, the Security light is blinking like it should. I'll post the dealer's diagnosis when I get it.

Got back from the dealer a short time ago. The diagnosis was a bad 12 V battery. They replaced the battery under warranty. The whole process was relatively painless. From the time the tow truck arrived to jump my car until I returned home from the dealer was approximately 90 minutes.

After the car was jumped, the security system indicator light on the dash was off, just like it should be. It's about a five minute drive to the Nissan dealer. When I arrived, I parked the car in the service garage and turned it off. After they completed the paperwork and tried to start the car, it would not start. They had to jump it to get it started, more evidence, in my mind, that the 12 V battery really was bad.

When they returned the car, the service advisor said that the reason the security system light was on was because the system detected the low battery voltage. I'm a bit skeptical, but everything seems to be fine now.

Off-topic, but I'll share it anyway. Our local Nissan dealer is relatively small. When you drive into the service department, you are literally driving into the service garage. They have eight service bays. When I pulled in, there were two white Rogues up on lifts next to each other. (My Rogue is also white.) After we finished with the paperwork, I asked the service advisor why the Rogues were up on the lifts. One was a brand-new 2014 and they were installing a trailer hitch on it. The one next to it had a transmission lying on the floor underneath it. The service advisor said it was a 2008 and needed a new transmission. He said they had lots of problems with 2008 and 2009 Rogue transmissions. I said, half jokingly, "But the second-generation CVT in the 2014's is great, right?" He said they haven't had any 2014s come in with transmission problems. I had to laugh to myself, but time will tell.
