Will a duplicate metal key work to lock/unlock the doors?

I want to be able to enter the car after I surf and prefer to carry the key in my wetsuit. I don't like the idea of hiding the master key outside the vehicle and using a lockbox can be a hassle when it's cold and/or dark.

Yes, there's no smartwork in the door handles or cylinders. A plain steel key will get you in and out just fine.

You're most welcome, happy to help! Just be very careful never to use it in the ignition. If you forget and try more than 7 times, the ECM's have a bad habit of committing hara kiri with a permanent lockout code.

Thanks for mentioning that. I'm sure I would have tried it in the ignition. Now I know not to.

We replace a lot of ECM's when folks don't know better. Usually it happens from a bad inductive key, people don't notice the security icon and crank it repeatedly with no key signal. I have no clue why Hitachi's programmers decided the ECM should kill itself, but that's what happens. No way to clear it. It has to be thrown away and replaced, so it's an expensive mistake!

I went to the Nissan dealer and they cut me two "Valet" keys while I waited for $12.99 each.

I don't know what Ace Hardware would have charged but I thought that was a reasonable price.
