Planning to buy 2014 SV AWD w Moonroof and Premium - only holdup is Safety Ratings Discrepancy

Its rated as IIHS Top Safety Pick

Small overlap front - Good
Moderate overlap front - Good
Side - Good
Roof strength - Good
Head restraints & seats - Good

But NHTSA has totally trashed the car

Overall - 4 out of 5
Frontal Crash - 3 out of 5
Side Crash - 5 out of 5
Rollover - 4 out of 5

Anyone did any research on this ???

NHTSA and IIHS test things differently. Plusses and minuses to both. You have to decide for yourself what will be acceptable to you.

Remember that they changed their ratings in 2011 so you can't really compare it to ratings before that year. They made them more strict and also the ratings now are more of a reflection of how the car does compared to similar vehicles than they are it's frontal crash performance overall. 3 stars today could be equivalent to most of the 5 star crash ratings from before 2011.

I personally like the IIHS tests better as the videos and photos are easily available from the tests. I don't think NHSTA does the same small overlap / moderate overlap front crash tests that the IIHS does.

Also Canadian buyer of 2014 Rogue should be aware that the Forward Collusion Warning (FCW) safety feature, which partly helped to get the top safety rating, that is available in US model Rogue SL's premium pkg - is NOT offered/available (even if you want want to pay for it) in Canada.
Consumers Report noted in it's full review:
"To get forward-collision warning, which has been shown to be effective in preventing crashes, you have to get the SL with the Premium package."

For now, Nissan Canada is keeping this for the Infiniti brand only.
Of the all the safety feature offered in the 2014 Rogue - I think this is the most important.

FCW doesn't apply brakes so isn't it a bit useless? Also, I don't get why they give us BSW and LDW in the premium package on the SV, but FCW is only for the SL in the US. You'd think if they're going to offer BSW and LSW on the SV they'd put FCW in there too. Maybe I'm missing something but I would not consider FCW more important than BSW in this car (with its massive blind spots) especially since FCW does not apply brakes like competing cars solutions do (Subaru Forester, Mitsubishi Outlander, etc).

The Subaru Forester is the same way as far as the packages go in the US. You have to get the most expensive touring model and then pay even more to get the Eyesight package. At least the Subaru will brake for you though.

I think that is Nissans whole point in leaving the FCW out of the SV package. Other wise what would be the point in people paying extra for the SL? Nissan is giving a reason why people will pay more money. Same with other brands as well. Just like Nissan not putting the family package as an offer with the SL- People who want a third row and leather will need to shop in the more expensive Merano or Pathfinder.
