Thought I would share a recent experience on my Rogue's OEM battery:

This week I experienced a weird failure of the 3.5 year old OEM battery (which still read 12.5V). The car was starting fine until this latest very cold weather snap hit and then it attempted to start (w/FOB) but could not after slowly turning over about 10 seconds. Didn't suspect the battery at first since I had NO indication of a problem with it till now. This happened in my garage (very lucky with that) so I took the battery to be tested and it came back with less than 400 CCA of capacity (640 CCA is normal replacement battery capacity).

Upon replacing the battery and ensuring it was hot, I attempted to start it and it really struggled. It was turning over fine but was catching "funny" and would not start. Realizing that the engine had been flooded with gas attempting to start it with the bad battery, I held the accelerator pedal to the floor and gave it another go while "feathering" the throttle as it began to catch and run. It blew out a huge cloud of stinky blue smoke but did finally start and I held it at ~2K RPM for a minute or so to be sure it had cleared all the old gas and would idle fine (which it did). Drove fine after that and started quickly ever since. For folks who never had an old-school carburetor based car, this trick of fixing a gas flooded engine can come in handy.

3.5 yrs. is not very long. My last vehicle's original battery lasted 10yrs. I wonder if that has something to do with you living in a warm climate since heat is the enemy. It is probably more important to check your batterie's fluid level where you live than someone like myself who lives in a colder climate.
Next year when my warranty expires I intend to buy a small lithium battery charger to carry around wherever I go.

3.5 years is a little on “the failed to soon” side. If your battery was still at 12.5v then the most likely problem was a loose connection at the battery post. Less likely but still a possibility is a cable that is deteriorating. The good news is that replacing the battery should have corrected the loose terminal. If however in a few days this issue comes back then I would be looking at the terminal connections and if those check out put a multimeter on the cables and see how they test.

What is a carburetor?

It was for sure a bad battery, I had it tested at the car parts store and saw the report. The battery posts and cables were fine. The new battery fixed the issue with the Rogue (once I got it started after flooding it).

FWIW: My OEM Kia battery died at exactly 24 months after I bought the car. It too acted fine up until the moment it croaked and then it was super weird. Battery posts and cables were fine on it as well (I super maintain my cars). New battery fixed the issue as well.

IMHO: Car battery's won't last like they used to, no matter the brand. You are doing well if you get four years out of them in normal service.

Agreed, getting 4 years on a battery can be quite a feat. Usually they slowly die, with longer cranking times that we don’t even notice until suddenly they’re dead. Or as one guy put it batteries die in the summer and we don’t notice till the weather turns cold.

I have a 2015 Nissan Rogue. The battery died yesterday and was only 2.5 years old, it got replaced today under warranty. The car is always parked in the garage so cold weather was not the issue. Looks like Nissan are using cheap batteries. The replacement OEM battery seems to be better and has 84 months warranty.

If you live in a cold climate 640 CCA is not enough. You should have a minimum of an 700+ CCA battery. That is why your battery life was so short. I get 6 years plus out of my batteries.
