I wonder if anyone has any good resources for comparing AWD systems in these vehicles. I always hear that the forester has the best AWD system. What makes it "the best"?

I also heard that the new CR-V has an upgraded, really good AWD system. What makes it so good?

I know the Rav4 you can lock the center diff which makes their system "good" but what else makes an AWD system good/bad?
That's a topic of much debate. Here's some links to bring you up to speed.

Here are a couple off road comparison videos that are kind of relavent.

Interesting AWD test:

No Rogue in this comparison but a cool test anyway with the competition:

And this one just cracks me up:

Most of these scenarios are atypical but it's always nice to know what you can expect in dire situations.

@ McHal: I have a slight problem with videos put out by a manufacturer. Those vids "comparing" those crossovers where ONLY the Subaru's perform well were conducted by Subaru. I'm sure if the thing was done by Honda the CRV would be the only one to make it up the ramp/hill... Not saying Subaru isn't good or one of the best, just saying there is doubt in my mind that none of the other vehicles could make it up those grades until an independent party conducts the tests.

I don't disagree with you in the slightest. I was more impressed with the test itself rather than the results. Besides, as far as the test and results go, it's not a real world scenario so to me it's kind of irrelevant, I don't ever plan on hill climbing that steep of a dirt hill or a 30.5 degree angle polyethelene/metal track with a hose running on it. I'm confident that my soon to be delivered Rogue will handle every scenario I intentionally throw at it as well as being capable of getting out of situations I didn't indent (snowy road conditions, sliding into a ditch, etc).

Nissan Rogue Takes to the Track - the Ice Track - With Ease

MONTREAL, Canada - Winter has been unrelenting throughout the U.S. and Canada this year. There certainly was no exception to be found in Montreal, a southwest city in the Canadian province of Quebec.

The very low temperatures and snowy conditions made it perfect timing for Nissan to invite Canadian journalists to Quebec's Laurentian mountains. Once there, the company's guests got to take the all-new Rogue for a spin on the ice-covered Mecaglisse circuit, which is part of a purpose-built, 700-acre all-season motorsports facility located in Notre-Dame-de-la-Merci.

"There is no better place, even in Canada," said Christian Meunier, president, Nissan Canada. "We were looking for a special location to show the journalists what it is like to drive the Rogue in the true Canadian winter."

The Mecaglisse circuit represents the most extreme situation that a driver could encounter from a traction point of view. It is a great place to highlight the advantages of Rogue's advanced all-wheel drive (AWD) system.

"It is not only just about AWD, the wheels powering down. It is also about the steering, the braking and how all of Rogue's systems come together to deliver a confident ride and driving experience," said Tim Franklin, Product Planning, Nissan Canada.

The Rogue impressed even the most experienced winter drivers, including the co-owner of the track and facility, Franck Kirchhoff. "I drove this car yesterday, and even if you drive without studs, only on regular winter tires, you really feel the car, and the handling is really good. I drive many cars during the winter, and I feel the Rogue is one of the best SUVs that you can get."

If the winter of 2013 and 2014 persists in dumping snow, at least there is a new hero to help navigate the roads - the all-new 2014 Nissan Rogue.

Well, I picked up my new Rogue AWD on Monday. Monday was a "DO NOT TRAVEL UNLESS IT'S MANDATORY" day here in Chicago-land according to the weather reports. The snow was coming down heavy, the wipers iced up 5 mins into my trip, and the roads were very deep with snow and quite slippery. I had to drive 80 miles through that to get home and all I can say is "WOW!" The Rogue handled the ice and snow like a dream. I've never owned a vehicle that handled this well. I turned on the display screen so I could see the AWD ratio (it's off by default) and it was cool to see when and how much the rear wheels were used. At one point, the 5 lane highway was only 2 lanes because the other three were so bad. I locked in the AWD and drove through the untraveled 3 for a while. I had zero problems. When I got home, my driveway had about 10 inches of fresh snow on it and I was able to drive through it as if it weren't there.

carefully read your owners manual, regarding the proper use of the AWD LOCK button.

Looks like Nissan announced a Nismo like Concept for the X-Trail (Rogue's European Twin) called X-Tremer at the 2014 Tokyo Auto Salon.

Hopefully they will sell these as NISMO aftermarket part kits. It really makes the Rogue look more "off-road" with skid plates and lift kit[

Screw the aftermarket kit idea.... Lets hope they make it as the Nismo model of the Rogue... Like they have a Nismo model Juke. It would cost way more to transform it after purchase than to get it that way as its own model.

That thing looks so sexy. Thatd be the Rogue for me!

I have owned a few AWD systems in the past few years and I have to say I am most impressed with the Audi Quattro!
Never owned a Subaru (too boring for my taste until recently, forester was in contention when I just got the Rogue)
Close second is my brother's Acura MDX followed by Mercedes 4matic. I loved and repeatedly bought BMW Xdrive but mainly for their driving dynamics.
I live in PA so weve seen a lot of snow and icy condition driving.

Here is an interesting detail on the Quattro

and here's and interesting write-up on most of the AWD systems:

In Japan, you can now get the X-Tremer treatment. http://www2.nissan.co.jp/X-TRAIL/option.html

I'm very tempted on the front end, but no idea how a) I get a Japanese dealer to order the parts and b) how I get it to Canada. I do know the lower section is available in Europe

i really wish nissan would stop tinkering around with silly marketing, and get back to the basics: making quality, powerful, inspiring cars that lasted 150k without a single piece of hardware needing to be replaced. nissan's new slogan should be: "we couldnt fix our troubled cars, so we made the horns louder!"

I agree. I actually wish I would have gotten a 2015 Wrangler 4 door instead. Nothing really wrong with mine, but for what Im paying, I could have got something FUN

In other news, I emailed Eibach Global asking if their Pro Lift kit which lifts the 2015 Nissan X-Trail with the 1.6liter diesel engine 25mm-30mm front and rear via springs (keep the OEM shocks) will fit the US spec Rogue... If it does, I'm ordering it.

I mean, they are the same body so I'm guessing the springs will fit... I guess I'm just wondering about spring rates...

I've been trying really hard to get my 2015 Nissan Rogue to look like the Xtremmer Concept revealed in Japan last year.

What I've done:
-Painted the roof and rear-view mirrors black
-New black tires and rims

The next thing I'd like to find are the Tire Flares. Anyone know where I could find them??? I've looked everywhere, and yet no luck. Aftermarket product would be fine.
