All reports thus far confirm that the 2014 Rogue will carry over the 2.5 Liter 4 cyl (QR25DE) from the past generation. The motor makes 170hp and 175 ft lbs of torque.

Clearly Nissan is holding over the prior engine for enhanced profit. It's a very high volume motor since it's shared with Altima, Frontier, Sentra SER, etc.. Despite it's early issues and recalls back in 2002/2003, it seems to have turned into a reliable motor as well. Anytime you have more than 10 years on a motor you must assume the manufacturer is pleased with its low warranty costs.

They say that the MPG's have increased from fwd hwy of 28 to 33. 5 mpg is a huge increase!

My conclusion is that the Rogue is a big profit center for Nissan and for that reason they have decided to keep the engine from the prior model. It's the second highest seller behind the altima. I think the restyle (cosmetics and additional features) will be enough to bring in new customers and continue boosting sales. This should hold true for another year or two, and then perhaps we'll see them come out with an additional engine option.

Personally, I think they need to bring out two new versions in upcoming model years. 1.) NISMO sport version. They should make at least 200 hp.. maybe more like 240. Perhaps they could use the MR16 from the Juke and pump up the tune a little bit. This version should also come with a 6 spd manual transmission as an option. 2.) ECO version. They need a diesel motor and this would be the excuse to do it with. I've always said that CVT's are much better matched to diesel motors. CVT takes advantage of a low revving, high torque motor and makes for great gas mileage. I bet they could get mid 40's mpgs out of the Rogue with a good diesel and a well-programmed CVT.

Any other thoughts?

They are probably saving the Altima like 182 + hp for the Nismo / refresh. I really don't expect that much more as long as it can do 0-60 in the 8 second range. It would still be close to CX-5, Rav4, CRV, etc. The 240hp Escape and Evoque are doing around 7 seconds, X1 is better. They also have a 2.5 V6 from the defunct G25 which makes about 220hp(?) Unfortunately, I can't afford any of these upgrades even if they were available.

The engine in the 2014 isn't exactly the same as the previous models. It's been re-worked to take full advantage of the new Xtonic cvt. Nissan does that weird thing where they don't change the numbers on the engine when they make changes to it.

An ECO version with diesel is long overdue. Now that diesel engines are making a comeback in the US, it wouldn't hurt Nissan to plop one in the Rogue. Look, I know the Qashqai (Euro Rogue version) isn't exactly the same but it's available with a 1.6L dci diesel, with the 6-speed manual gearbox. Nissan needs to stop treating the North American market like a red headed step child. :frown:

I drove a Juke diesel recently (6 speed) and was really impressed with the way it drove and the fuel economy out of it. I would think that engine should be able to drop right into the rogue.

Nissan miiiiight be waiting until the New Titan comes out before diving head first into diesel here in the USA. They'll have to invest heavily in their infrastructure to make that plunge. Every dealership would need a diesel mechanic, etc. Once that happens though, we should see diesel going into a lot more products.
