Hello All,
I am in the market to buy a CUV. Initially I was considering usual CUV leaders in following order:
1) CR-V (good ride & cargo, but my wife finds both front and back too ugly, and no 2nd row air vent for my kids were deal breaker),
2) RAV-4 (looks okay, but seats are too hard, also harsher ride),
3) CX-5 (did not test drive, cargo too small for our need),
4) Forester (looks dated both inside and outside),
5) Rogue 2013 (1st gen) - after reading about the CVT issues - I would never even consider due to CVT unreliability.

But after seeing the all new 2014 Rogue SL with Premium package (panoramic roof, surround camera, ... all the safety techs) - we really love it.
It just looks and feels a class higher (even Acura RDX don't have those features/options at $ 5k-7k more).

As we will be doing a lot of long (6-12 hr) road trips on our next CUV - so I am bit concern how the new CVT differs/improved from the old CVT.
Also do you know if this new CVT has been used in another Nissan car?

Thanks in advance.

We are also in the same boat as you are Hauki, like the Rogue 2014 SV with premium pacakge but hesistant on the known issues with the CVT.

I have also been asking the same question from the local Nissan dealership and they are saying they have improved the CVT on the 2014. Too early for the first 2014 owners for a feedback. Hopefully somebody here mechanically inclined can chime in.

Hawki:

I can give you my OPINION on this. As a background, I bought a brand new Nissan Rogue 2WD SL back in 2008 and currently it has 77k miles. It is one of the better cars that I owned and I have not experienced any CVT issues that people are mentioning in forums etc. I would like to note that CVT definitely feels "different" than automatic transmissions and you need to get used to it. Also Nissan on average sells >10,000 Rogues per month (not a guess) and there is approximately 700,000 (a complete guess on my part) 1st gen Rogues on road today. I think the CVT issues are being exaggerated and only small percentage of owners are experiencing it. Having said that, I wouldn't buy a 1st Gen Rogue today as it is a 6 year old car design and new Rogue feels fantastic compared to my 1st Gen. I just test drove the 2nd gen this weekend, I felt almost they put a Nissan Badge by mistake instead of Infiniti Badge.

Also, to answer your question, the 2nd gen Rogue CVT is similar to 2013-14 Altima CVT. When I test drove the 2nd Gen Rogue, I really couldn't feel any typical CVT characteristics and felt to me exactly like my wife's VW Tiguan's 6 speed Auto.

I am also currently shopping for a small SUV as well. I test drove 2014 CRV, it felt like a car compared to Rogue and the features were so scarce for its price (no push button start, no active safety techs, tiny rearview camera that is very far away from the driver etc.) The car drove nice though, I liked the outside design (unlike your wife).

Then I went to Acura next door to test drive RDX. I cannot believe people are buying that car for $36k+. The driver information screen was dot matrix from 80s, same tiny rearview camera display as CRV, no HIDs, no foglights, no Navigation at that price, no power tailgate, no active safety tech even with $4k technology option package, really weird center console design etc. I would rather buy a CRV and save almost $10k.

Then on to the Subaru dealership for the Forester. I had really high expectations as many magazines, cars.com etc. selected it as the 2014 SUV of the year. I liked the exterior as it was bold (I also like Honda Pilot's exterior as a reference, many people hate it). The interior was an absolute disappointment. It felt like a 90s Corolla with really hard to turn AC controls, cheap radio, etc.

Also, I would disregard CVT issues that pathfinder owners are experiencing as that CVT design is not the same as Altima or Rogue. Nissan decided to put steel chain instead of belt to Nissan Pathfinder to tow 5000 pounds, that's what is causing the issues. Altima and Rogue still uses belt.

If you're that concerned about the reliability of the previous gen CVT, why would you even consider one that's completely redesigned and has no reliability info to reference?

I and others have said this before, yes there were (past tense) issues with the CVT in the Rogue's first two model years, but those issues have been addressed. I have enough confidence in the vehicle that I am on my second Rogue, as are many others on this forum. Negative criticisms generally come from CVT haters with preconceived notions, and no about of data will change their black hearts. Haters gonna hate. The Rogue is Nissan's second-best-selling vehicle, which speaks volumes about how reliable the CVT really is.

Thank You all for your feedbacks, exactly what I wanted to hear - because I am completely sold on the 2014 Rogue

You just spoke/wrote what I felt too. To me - it is the best valued & best tech featured CUV in the market.

Happy Holidays All.

This.

I think it's infinitely better to buy a product near the end of its cycle than when it's brand new, so you'll get a vehicle with all the kinks worked out. I've never driven a 2008 Rogue, but from what I've read here, the 2013 transmission, while technically the same part, is manufactured way better than back in 2008.

Thank you all too.
This has given us a better understanding that the 2014 Rogue is a better choice.

Now if the local dealership here can find the spec we want.

Happy Holidays.

I bought a 2008 Rogue AWD SL when they first came out and never experienced any problems with the CVT, in fact it was the most trouble free vehicle I've ever owned. Kept it 5 years and traded it for a 2013 Altima 3.5 SL and I am a big fan of the CVT transmission. While getting my Altima an oil change at my dealer I made the mistake of driving a 2014 AWD Rogue SL and now I'm buying one as soon as the dealer gets one in my color. I think you'll be very happy with a 2014 Rogue.

I am having my 2008 SL AWD with paddle shifts [ love to have this shifters ]. CTV trouble free untill few months back they changed my CTV which running 76k. No idea they gave me a repaired or new one. so far very happy, not making any noise. Remember the gas paddle is very sensitive and is learning the way you drive, drive like a gentle man will give you a good mileage. That computer is learning your habit of driving. Subaru and Toyota are using CTV.

I have a Nissan Rogue 2008 AWD. Currently, 59K Miles on it. On Thursday, when it was -1 degrees outside, the engine started making a mild throbbing noise (like git-git-git) when I was leaving the accelerator. That is, not when I was pushing the gas pedal but only when I was leaving the gas pedal – at any speed. Then later that day, while returning from Office it started making noise near the gear handle area. The sound was like a gear shaft being knocked on. It persisted for 4-5 miles initially when I started (it was cold outside -4 Degrees). Then that noise / sound went away. Now it is only the mild throbbing noise (like git-git-git) when I drive. This time whether I push accelerator or not. Any suggestions on the prognosis? Please. Thank You.

Watch this video and tell us if your noise is similar to the noise that starts 28 seconds into the video.

That's your heat shield being loose.

is the second generation cvt more reliable? also, does the rogue come with a cover for its "trunk" that i saw the other day on a lexus suv? i also rented a prius once and it has a cover to seperate the top part of its trunk from the bottom part. i was told it has the cover but that also covers the spare so you can only cover one at a time, but there's a hook/indentation in the back for that cover. can you buy a seperate aftermarket or nissan "cover" so that you can have that thing that seperates the trunk and keeps the stuff in the trunk cool and protected from the sun? i saw that on other suvs but didn't see that on this rogue. why? it's a 2015 rogue awd sv premium package
