Hawki:
I can give you my OPINION on this. As a background, I bought a brand new Nissan Rogue 2WD SL back in 2008 and currently it has 77k miles. It is one of the better cars that I owned and I have not experienced any CVT issues that people are mentioning in forums etc. I would like to note that CVT definitely feels "different" than automatic transmissions and you need to get used to it. Also Nissan on average sells >10,000 Rogues per month (not a guess) and there is approximately 700,000 (a complete guess on my part) 1st gen Rogues on road today. I think the CVT issues are being exaggerated and only small percentage of owners are experiencing it. Having said that, I wouldn't buy a 1st Gen Rogue today as it is a 6 year old car design and new Rogue feels fantastic compared to my 1st Gen. I just test drove the 2nd gen this weekend, I felt almost they put a Nissan Badge by mistake instead of Infiniti Badge.
Also, to answer your question, the 2nd gen Rogue CVT is similar to 2013-14 Altima CVT. When I test drove the 2nd Gen Rogue, I really couldn't feel any typical CVT characteristics and felt to me exactly like my wife's VW Tiguan's 6 speed Auto.
I am also currently shopping for a small SUV as well. I test drove 2014 CRV, it felt like a car compared to Rogue and the features were so scarce for its price (no push button start, no active safety techs, tiny rearview camera that is very far away from the driver etc.) The car drove nice though, I liked the outside design (unlike your wife).
Then I went to Acura next door to test drive RDX. I cannot believe people are buying that car for $36k+. The driver information screen was dot matrix from 80s, same tiny rearview camera display as CRV, no HIDs, no foglights, no Navigation at that price, no power tailgate, no active safety tech even with $4k technology option package, really weird center console design etc. I would rather buy a CRV and save almost $10k.
Then on to the Subaru dealership for the Forester. I had really high expectations as many magazines, cars.com etc. selected it as the 2014 SUV of the year. I liked the exterior as it was bold (I also like Honda Pilot's exterior as a reference, many people hate it). The interior was an absolute disappointment. It felt like a 90s Corolla with really hard to turn AC controls, cheap radio, etc.
