Glancing through a thread some folks were talking about checking fluids, etc. Decided to check mine even though I visited the dealer today.

Coolant tank is completely empty! WTF!

Normal to have a completely empty coolant tank with only 33k kms on theach motor??

Are you referring to the radiator expansion tank? If you checked the coolant by the radiator cap and it was full, you're fine as it's quite normal. All you need to do is put some coolant mix (50% antifreeze and 50% distilled water) in the overflow tank, which is marked with high and low levels.

The coolant in the radiator expands when the engine heats and the overflow tank receives it through a small hose. When the engine cools after you shut it down, the coolant is drawn back into the radiator. Check the overflow tank now and then and when it's down but not empty add coolant mix as needed.

I'm used to seeing some remnants of liquid in the expansion tank which had me worried. Gave it a light shake to make sure my eyes weren't playing tricks on me and it was bone dry.

Very strange considering I just took it to the dealer today and they were supposed to do a full inspection on it (warranty)

Yes it's true that if you take off the radiator cap and it's full, you're ok. However every vehicle I've ever had with an overflow tank was filled at least to the minimum line by the dealer. I never saw the overflow tank empty. Somebody at your dealership did not do their job.

My thoughts exactly. None the less, went to Canadian Tire and picked up some OEM coolant. Seemed like I had to fill the overflow tank and a little more. I'll watch it over the next few days to see if it drops again.

I've had this happen on my R51 Pathfinder. There was no leak, and I pressurized the system, still found nothing. Added like a gallon of coolant, and it never dropped after that.

A mystery!

These days the wife says she smells coolant, but I checked the rad and the overflow and both were right where they are supposed to be.

Same thing happened to my 2016 rogue, went to dealer couple of days ago for the first 5k miles service, noticed that they didnt top up the overflow with coolant, still in MIN level, actually since day 1 when i got the car its in MIN level. I was just wondering if they forgot to top it up or its just fine even if its in MIN level.

It should go without saying, but YES as long as it's at or above the minimum level it's fine (that's how it's designed to be). It's an overflow tank, it's NOT supposed to have fluid at the full level at all times (it's an overflow tank).

this happens sometimes. refill it and see what happens every 500 miles.
look for any white staining or spraying in the engine bay.
also remove the radiator cap, and see if there is fluid there.

(ps: the rogue doesnt have an expansion tank. its just an over-flow bottle. fords have expansion tanks that are pressurized along with the system)
