So I have a 2014 Nissan Quest Van and just recently the shifting going down hills has not been working right. So upon researching, it says it it the Engine braking System and something with the transmission too....doesn't make sense to me. It started after I hit a rather larger bump at the baseball field. I have checked my fluids and they are all full. We have a big trip coming up in a couple of weeks and I can't afford my van breaking down or even a costly bill, so if there is something I can do myself, I would appreciate it. This is the first time, I have had a Nissan, and anything like CRV or whatever on a car. My guy is useless unless it is an older car, he can't figure this "NEW STUFF" out. Thanks

You really need a good scan to tell you which system the problem is in. On most Nissans the TCM uses the 3-axis G-sensor in the ABS to tell it what a hill is, or it's possible the transmission is in a partial "limp" and simply won't do engine braking. Most parts store scanners will do both ABS and TCM, so I'd start there.

thank you so much. I know a lot of our areas only want to do the scan if your Check Engine Light is on, but these scanners can work for other things? My daughter has one, so I might have her try to check it tomorrow

Only if your daughter's unit will do ABS and transmission. Most of the budget scanners out there won't do either one, although you may get certain transmission codes by way of the engine.

So based on my manual the Van is CTV and this is what is going on. All it says is to make sure the fluid is full. I have checked and it is full. My dad suggested we change the Transmission filter.

Filters are rarely an issue on Nissan CVT's. If the problem is a slipping transmission then there will be codes in it. No offense, but throwing parts at it without knowing what's going on is a foolish exercise.

the car parts places around here use the simple readers to run the codes. And the dealerships charge over $100 just to put the reader on the vehicle, what is the best route?

I have never had a vehicle that down shifted on its own and I love it, but it sounds terrible right now that it will not downshift. Like I have not hit the clutch

You say you hit a bad bump, have you looked underneath to see if you bashed the pan? There's very little clearance on the late RE0F09 trannies between the pickup and the pan, so if the pan gets dented it can actually starve the pump for fluid.

Virtually all parts store scanners do ECM (engine), TCM (transmission), ABS (brakes), and the airbag brain. I'd start there and see what it says. But first, poke a flashlight underneath and see if the problem is obvious.

thank you. I stopped at Advanced and they said they couldn't scan it. He will be looking over my vehicle this weekend, as soon as he is done with his POS truck, which is always going down for one thing or another.

So we did the filter change and refilled the fluids, now it will not engage in gears, it will start right up, moves into gears but will not connect into the gears. Suggestions?

Is the filter the right one? There are aftermarket filters out there for the '09B which have inlets which are too deep, they contact the pan and prevent the pump from sucking fluid. That's the most likely cause.

I got the part from AutoZone. Someone suggested he might have put it in wrong for forgot some O ring. I am just hoping this will be a quick fix. We are supposed to go on vacation starting next Thursday.

Nope, it's very probably the wrong part. If you have the original, clean it up and put it back in. They gave you a filter for an '09A, which has a deeper pan. You can probably tell you're not the first person I've seen with this issue.

And me to the list of folks who replaced the transmission filter in the pan with one that Advanced Auto said fit my 2013 Quest a couple of years back. It didn't and same transmission issue resulted. Had to pull the pan again, put the old filter back in, and then all was well in the world.

There are several YT vids out there telling you there's no need to ever replace that pan filter, but in the event you do, make very sure you compare the size and length of the filter inlet on the replacement with the original.
