New Rogue Takes on the Old Guard

Image

With momentum on its side, the top-selling Honda CR-V is trying to repeat its sales success in 2014. But it won’t be easy because Nissan is fielding a new version of the Rogue that is seeking to steal some of that market share.

The Verdict

The new Rogue looks much better than the Honda. Actually, even the 1st generation Rogue looks better than the Honda.

It'll be interesting how many buyers choose the good looks of the Rogue with more bells and whistles compared to the much more proven and reliable CRV, the writers of this article mention the 5-speed transmission almost as a "dirty little secret" but the reality is that the 5-speed will be more reliable than the Rogue CVT long-term. That's not to say the Rogue CVT will be unreliable, just that the Honda is using a long-term proven powertrain that has shown itself to be bullet proof.

I'm not sure which one I would choose, there are pros and cons to both. When I bought my Rogue in 2008 these were the two finalists, my wife broke the tie because she hated the styling of the CRV, and the styling is still nothing to get excited about. Today if I were buying, I would go for reliablity and build quality only, buying based on styling is not something I'd recommend.

I looked at the CRV before purchasing my 14 rogue and the rogue had nicer finishes. The dash for example in the 14 rogue i have is soft, has leather arm rests on the door and center console. most are going cheap with the fit and finishes now days.

The Rogue has some nice finishes in places that matter (padded arm rests). However there was a trade off....for example the headliner is epically cheap, like as bad as the worst I've ever seen cheap. I think it might be made of paper.

I drove the 2014 CR-V, and honestly I didn't even feel that it was close. I would have gone with a Cherokee over the CR-V. I felt like the CR-V was solid, but not spectacular...yet they were pricing it as spectacular.

Honda will have to do a refresh on this before I would consider one.

I looked at the CR-V before I purchased the Rogue also. I wanted to like it since we have had a couple of Honda's, but there were a couple of problems for me from just sitting it in. 1.) the front seat didn't go back far enough, I could have managed if I had to drive it a day or something as a loaner, but I needed about 2 inches more to be comfortable which the Rogue had. 2.) even bigger for me was the lack of center arm rest between the front seats, I tried and could not keep my arm on their little fold down arm.
