I recently had the opportunity to put a few hundred miles on a 2014 Mazda 6 i sport over the coarse of few days.

This is a car that I tried to steer my sister toward when she was car shopping and thought she wanted a Ford Escape. She did not even want to test drive it but she did buy a 2013 Altima S so I suppose that is the lessor of two evils (CVT and all)

I have test drove 5 or 6 of the top model the i Grand Touring and really felt like this car might be a good replacement for my Jaguar because it has most of the same features a similar look and it gives up 500+ hp for 26/38 mpg (combined 30-31 mpg).

The look is amazing for a car in this class. I have had a 2013 Altima in the same color next to a 2014 6 and the build quality is easy to see. The fit and finish of the 6 is steps above the Altima, everything from body gaps and paint finish on the exterior to interior panels fit and feel are better on the 6. The Altima has a much bigger front seat by leg room by nearly 4" but the 6 is enough for me. The Altima feels slower due to the retarded CVT transmission. The 6 comes with paddles that do a pathetic job of initiating gear changes. The seats in the Altima feel mushy they are made from a foam that also is used in space beds or something. The 6 seats are sculpted the material on the seating surface is textured and rougher to the touch. The bolsters are softer material with firm support. Really the 6 seats would really be a great swap in any C6 vette

I drove nearly 300 miles and managed just over 30 mpg. My drive time included sitting in a parkinglot on my phone and laptop for nearly an hour with the car running and ac blowing.

here are some Mazda 6 pics.

A few engine shots of the skyactive 2.5 4 banger it has direct injection. The intake is the front and the exhaust is the rear opposite of what I have seen on the Honda/Nissan 4's I have been working on lately.

room for a turbo?

The motor is rated at 185hp and 185 lb of torque. It is missing torque I think the car to wait for is the 2.2 turbo diesel. The diesel is supposed to make 300 lb of torque and not require a Nox additive to meet emission standards, so no Urea additive (money maker).

It's a slick looking sedan (almost coupe'ish), and seems to be way more practical as a daily driver than a used Jag XK. I may have to go check 'em out because right now the Focus ST is topping my list for kid friendly DDs with the Scooby BR-Z right behind it.

My ex wifes '01 altima was only rated around 170hp and it was such a bore to drive. I disliked driving that thing! My s2000 was a lot more fun to drive (duh), but what I am getting at, is a person may get bored of only 185hp?

Do NOT get the ST. I drove one and it sucked and there is zero room in that backseat. Even for little kids. If you like the 6 but want some more power, might I suggest the Speed 3? Plenty of room for kids and lots of power + fun for you.

Mazda 6: Roomy car, but big. I didn't drive it. It's a good looking sedan though!
Focus (not ST): Been driving my friend's '14 and it seems like "too big" of a car, but is at least 12" shorter than a Mazda 6, which is why I didn't drive it...I guess everything feels big when moving on from an s2000.
