So my sister flew my mother out to visit for Mother's Day / my birthday. I also got to meet my 15 month old nephew for the first time. We only have the Miata, so we needed to rent transport. Enter the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

First, the auto-trader shots.

It's a good looking truck. They made goo use of the interior space when they built it. Despite all the airbags, it feels big on the inside. We put 2 American adults and a baby seat in the back comfortably.

We went for a 5 hour trip with 4 adults and the baby and had no need for more space or legroom.

Will it Stroller?

Image

Yes. The stroller fits weirdly well. This dirt is after a week of taking the stroller in and out. The carpets did very well.

Does it fit in the garage?

Image

With room to spare.

Does it have a lot of off-roady gizmos that will never be used on a luxury 4x4?

Image

Uhyup (Yes for you non-bumpkins)

Does it have an AC power outlet?

Image

Yes. and heated rear seats, and some USB charging ports.

Does it have the 3 power items that always break at 130k miles?

Image

Yup. I didn't take a pic of the pwr seats but it has them as well.

Does it have a back up camera?

Yes.

How far is that red line?

Image

This far.

Is the gauge power on cool?

No.

So what did you do with it?

Lots of things. We went shopping a lot, took a 6 hour road trip. Hauled a few loads from Lowe's, Walmart, etc. We basically used it as the family truckster and tourist boat for the week.

We went out to the coast to Sunset Beach, where the end of Goonies was shot.

My mother got to step into the Pacific ocean for the first time, and we packed a jar of sand for Robin's scrapbook.

We then drove up the coast to Lewis and Clark National Park, where we saw a recreation of their winter fort.

It was a great trip. The Jeep was a sanctuary to rest in after the hiking. And the ride home was comfortable and easy.

So you liked it?

Well, I have some issues. When I first got my hands on the Jeep, I loved it. I though that Jeep had bought something I WANTED. I enjoyed it. However, as I lived with it for the week, it's one glaring flaw became a serious annoyance. It single handedly turned it from "Vehicle I want to buy." to "It'll do." That flaw, was the transmission. The 7 speed automatic felt ADHD. It's the only way to explain it. The transmission is either shifting so low and fast that the engine never revs. The throttle pedal seems to have a switch at 20~25% that lets it rev all the way to the redline, and there is nothing in between. In city driving, the transmission can never decide what gear it wants to be in, and I can never find a throttle pressure because of it. I put a little throttle in to change lanes, and the truck drops two gears. I found myself getting frustrated and saying"No. No. No." to the transmission. So I gave up and tried 'manual mode' which is a joke. The pedal shifters are the ONLY option for changing gears making it ridiculous to try and use WHEN YOU HAVE TO TURN THE THING. Which is like ALL THE TIME. Come on Jeep, WTH. Even in a straight line it is useless. Every shift slams into gear as if manual mode suddenly means you're Lewis Hamilton. I hated this transmission so much, I was glad to hand in the keys.

TL:DR

The Jeep is great, and they ruined an almost perfect truck with a needlessly complicated completely useless transmission.

I had a similarly unpleasant experience with Chrysler's deservedly-maligned ZF 9-speed transmission in the 200. So much shifting you never find any power. Every time you think you've discovered where the power has been hiding, the transmission jumps out in front of you, makes an obnoxious noise, and before you can see where it ran off to the power is gone again.

The latest Grand Cherokee is pretty nice-looking on the outside. Unfortunately, the interior is very clearly Chrysler parts bin stuff, and that still isn't a good thing. I can't stand the "display over gauges" arrangement of the gauge cluster. Half gauges with a big ol screen that doesn't really do anything particularly useful is a crummy gimmicky way to lay out the driver instrumentation.

Yeah the dash was lackluster at best. Felt like a normal dash. I think that is what they went for.

I bet there's a software patch for the transmission.

Friend of mine bought a 2015 Limited last month. It is SUPERB. This is what the QX4/Pathfinder should have evolved into, not that crossover BS.

Jeep charges anywhere from 29k-60k and they sell each and every one with minimal effort.

That's a lot of electrical s***. I wonder how big the alternator is.
