2013 Rogue rear hatch not latching

I tried searching this everywhere but haven’t found the same issue mentioned by anyone.
My rear hatch isn’t latching when closed, the door ajar warning is on, and the inteigent key door buttons don’t register on any of the doors when I try to use them. I can lock from the inside or use the fob buttons, but it still won’t latch the back hatch.

I can hear a slight click when I use the open button for the hatch, but nothing actually happens. I popped open the inside panel and saw the emergency release lever is stuck in the right position, and I can’t slide it over to the left. It won’t budge at all.

The latch part that wraps around the eye/catch piece on the inside can move freely, just doesn’t seem to be held in place when it needs to actually close.

I tried checking fuses, but not sure what fuse it would be under. The ones I thought it may be are all fine.

This happened once in the winter and I figured it was just too cold for it for whatever reason, left it for a day and came back to it being able to latch. I’m going on two days now in warmer weather and no change.
Any ideas if it’s a simple fix or not?

Could have simply frozen in winter but now it's not. If you can't stick a slot screwdriver up in the slot to roll the latch key over to fully locked then the latch assembly is likely broken internally.

I have seen the rare occasion where the trunk lid bumpers were out too far to prevent the latch fully locking, run them in a bit and it should then work if that is so. They hold the lid up just enough it cannot fully latch.

Just as a quick update-
Took it into the shop and yeah, whole latch mechanism was dead. About $300 for replacement part and labor. Oh well! Now I can close it.
