I am ready for my first oil change and would like some feedback on synthentic oil. I am not looking for a debate on if I should use synthetic or not. I would like to know what synthetics are recommended? 0w-30? 5w-30? Mobil, Penzoil, etc. Just go to dealer and have them put in a Nissan brand? Also, I have read that if I change to synthetic, wait until the 2nd oil change to make it permanent. Has anyone else heard this?

Welcome aboard!

Keep in mind, your new Quest shares an engine with TONS of other NIssan and Infiniti vehicles, so this topic has been beaten bloody. The best advice is this:

Use the oil weight recommended by the manufacturer, regardless of whether you use syn or dino oil.

There's no need to wait until the 2nd oil change. People will come up with all kinds of voodoo and rituals, but the reality is, the VQ is a precision engine and doesn't require a real "break-in" period. Feel free to go ahead and switch to synthetic at your first oil change.

Also, rather than fretting too much about brand or specifications, know this: The BEST oil is CLEAN oil. I'd rather buy a 100k-mile car that had regular 3k-mile oil changes with cheap Wal-Mart store brand oil, than the same car that had sporadic oil changes with Mobil 1 synthetic. Even cheap dino oil is sufficient for your VQ35 engine IF it's changed regularly.

BTW, I'm a big fan of the newer Quest. Hope you're loving it!

What does the manual say?

That's the best.

on manual, it said Engine oil with API Certification Mark*1, Viscosity SAE 0W-20, As an alternative to this recommended oil, SAE 5W-30 conventional petroleum oils may be used and meet all specifications and requirements necessary to maintain the New Vehicle Limited Warranty. so is it better to use 0W-20 or 5w-30 in New york city.
thanks

Both will suffice. If you want "better" go with 0W-20 and run the longer OCI permitted to keep it within warranty. If you want to change our less than every 5k miles, go with a quality 5W-30 such as Castrol, Pennzoil, or Mobil 1. Avoid High Mileage stuff and they're all pretty similar so get whichever one is on sale.

Use an OEM filter which you can buy at the dealer.

The owner's manual for my 2016 states the preferred oil is 0w20, but in smaller print below that it states that 5w30 is OK for use as well.

I know for me personally, I wouldn't stress over finding or paying the price for 0w20, when you're supposed to dump it at 5-6K miles anyway. Nothing against 0w20 or 20wts in general. I think they've proven to be a fine oil over the years, but they're there to squeeze every drop of fuel economy out of a drivetrain as possible.

I don't usually use 0w20 in my 2016 Subaru Forester either given Subaru's 6K mile oil change spec. If I can get it on sale by the quart I'll use it, but I tend to use 5w20.
