Hi everyone,

Just picked up a clear-out deal on a 2013 JX35 AWD with Premium + Driver Assist Package in White. In Canada, it appears (at least at all my local dealerships) all the cars come with a port/dealer/factory installed tow package (hitch, power plug). I am not much of a tower, but it's nice to have the option now...

Something my dealer told me, I am looking to confirm: He said that the 2014 QX60's (aka the 2014 JX35) will have an upgraded 5,000lb towing capacity, due to a revised CVT transmission. Apparently my late-year build 2013 JX35's model number comes up as having this transmission, as they began putting this new up-rated CVT in the JX from March 2013 build dates onwards. So he said I can tow 5,000lbs.

Can anyone confirm if the above is true, or if my sales rep is full of BS (as they usually are...)

Here is what I don't get.

The JX35 is essentially identical to the Pathfinder, at least from a mechanical standpoint. Same engine, Same CVT Transmission.

The pathfinder has a 5000lb capacity, where as the JX only list 3500lb.

I suspect the reasoning behind this is purely marketing based on the target audience, and not a technical restriction.

I just installed the receiver, finisher and harness this weekend myself, and unless it is a frame limitation (I have been under both the JX and the Pathfinder and visually the frame looks the same to me), there should be no issue towing 5k lb's.

Thanks guys!

I too have an Aoirl 2013 build, and have 7th gear in the manual/tiptronic setting... So do the earlier builds only have 6th? Does having 7th mean I have the updated tranny for 5,000lbs towing?

My JX35 has a February build date and I only have a 6 speed trip tropic transmission. I would prefer to have the higher towing capacity.

The Infinity JX 2013 model can tow up to 3500 lbs without trailer brakes. 3,500 lbs to an unstated amount with trailer brakes. Just recently towed our car. Combined weight of 5800 lbs with the trailer! Stayed under 65 mph on a hilly freeway, the engine didn't struggle at all and the JX drove great!

Also, stuff that I didn't mention above. Jx did not go above 3,000 rpms when towing uphill with 5,800 lbs. Pretty damn good for a light weight SUV of only 4,700 lbs with two passengers.

-DON'T EXCEED 3,500 LBS towing with FRONT WHEEL DRIVE models.

For AWD. 5,000 lbs limit.
-Check all tire pressure's in the JX, even though (TPMS) tire pressure monitoring system may not be on the tires could still be off in PSI, they were on my JX. Recommend 34 PSI with tires provided by the factory when towing.
-You will need a wire adapter for most trailers rentals if you don't already own one. About $15.99 for 3 pin to 5 pin adapter online or at uhaul.
-Try not to exceed gross vehicle weight of about 9,000 lbs.
-If you have a wild hair for driving at or beyond the tow limit of 5,000 lbs then TAKE YOUR TIME and have limited cargo. Don't go beyond 5,800 lbs. If so (test at you own risk).
-Check tow ball, hitch, pin rating when towing around 5,000 lbs less or slightly more.
-When towing 4,500 or more. Longer trips is more stress on suspension, transmission. More maintenance in the long run and change the fluids more often when towing.

Something to consider.
-When towing above the limit; if you hit somebody else it is possible that you could struggle getting insurance money for the repairs.

Hope that helps!

My dealer service adviser recommended not to tow without an accessory transmission cooler. I need to tow about 2500# a total of about 3000 miles per year max. Anybody with long term issues? My Pathifinder is a SL 2014 with hitch and 7 pin harness built in. Maybe it already has the cooler built in? Anyone know about that?

According to the 2014 Pathfinder Owner's Manual, the maximum towing capacity is 5000lbs, no cooler required.
