2013 Infiniti EX37: Rear seat leg room, etc.

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

I've been waiting for months for the new EX37 to arrive at the showrooms (with the larger 3.7 liter engine), but in my heart of hearts I was also hoping that Infiniti would finally wake up and add a bit more rear seat leg room. That's really the only drawback to this "hatchback version of the G sedan". In fact, the G sedan has more rear seat leg room than the EX35/37. The fact is, other car manufacturers have managed to squeeze more (rear) interior space into a compact exterior package, e.g., the Honda Fit (which is small on the outside, but relatively BIG on the inside). Infiniti could have very easily re-designed the back seat to give it a little more leg room WITHOUT increasing the exterior dimensions of the vehicle. That, along with maybe giving it a couple more MPG in fuel economy, would put the EX37 at the head of its class, for sure.

I own a 2005 G35X and I'm looking to replace it with either a 2013 EX37X, a G37X or an M37X. Any comments or suggestions on any of the above?

Wouldn't hurt either if the coupe and sedan BOTH had the same wheelbase as the EX. :gotme
It's absolutely INSANE that Infiniti purposely shortened the wheelbase and THAT is what cuts into our rear seat legroom. :bs:
Not sure there is much more interior designing that can get around that short of cutting notches in the backs of the front seats.
Infiniti shot the EX in the foot from the start to leave the FX as top-dog.
The BMW X1 (+6 inches) or Audi Q3 have MORE legroom when compared to our EXs... forget the X3 (+8 inches) or the Q5.
Like sitting in a limo compared to our EXs... Time for a redesign...

I looked at both the X3 and the Q5. Being a former and big fan of BMWThat was my 1st choice but i did not like the price tag and I wanted a new car or a year old one so that left out the X3. The q5 is nice looking and had more rear leg room. but somthing about the interor didn't match the price tag and its not cheap. So I looked at the EX35 which was on the list too and loved it. I'm single with one child so I don't really care about the leg room and I don't travel with others often. Compaired to my Fiat it has plenty leg room. I love the Power it has over the Q5 too.

I like my vehicle's 4 doors to actually be able to contain a person within.
Us girls at work sometimes do like to share a ride and carpool out to lunch. Its nice to have a cute SUV-like car that can actually CARRY people and not just look pretty.

For me the EX is a one-term proposition UNLESS Infiniti steps up to the engineering plate like the other manufacturers have and does their homework.

Its feels good to sing the praises of our EX35/EX37... BUT unless we hold Infiniti's feet to the fire with warranty claims and consumer focus clinics; we will not be doing anything to IMPROVE the breed. :poke:

Seems other manufacturers are able to squeeze a lot of legroom out of similar wheelbase SUVs. If the EX needed a longer wheelbase to do battle then Infiniti should have just rolled out the same length wheelbase that the Gs are rolling on. At least then we would be able to do an exhaust swap without having to hack pieces out of the piping to fit it on our EX and regular sized 5'10" people can fit in the front and the back simultaneously. :dblthumb:

Here are some numbers I took some hours to dig around and gather in one spot... ENJOY :inoutgay:

P.S: The Q3 has a curb wt of approx 3,430 lbs.

Yikes, I never realized that the rear seat had just 28" of legroom. That's less than an economy class seat (typically between 31-32")

Interesting table. So the EX has a wheelbase like the Q5 and X3 but the interior dimensions of the X1 and Q3. It has the best turning radius of any of them, and weighs more like the smaller vehicles. It has the largest front seat legroom and worst backseat legroom, meaning you can equalize it some by moving the front seats forward. I had a rant a while back on another thread about Infiniti designing the EX for what was in 2008 a niche market that emphasized sportiness over room and utility. If you wanted more room then you bought a midsize vehicle, but after the economy crashed the equation changed and people wanting the lower price, better fuel economy and cachet of the smaller CUVs began dumping their MDXs, X5s and Q7s. But they weren't willing to sacrifice too much on space, so as the other manufacturers responded by growing their boxes (and bringing up smaller replacements like the X1) Infiniti slowly ported over powertrain components from the G37, essentially leaving the EX a niche vehicle in what is now a very hot market. Rather than redesign it, they went midsize with the JX. I love the unique qualities of our vehicles but personally would like more room and utility as well, as long as they could stay within the G's dimensions and not make it heavier. Infiniti's response to the market is a head scratcher. The G is long in the tooth with a redeisgn due out next year, and the EX is almost as bad. The VQ engine series had been powerhouses, but now are matched on HP and bested on economy by a number of companies, and even the tech stuff is overmatched. I can buy a Kia Sportage with heated AND cooled seats, a Ford Escape with a hatch I just wave my foot under to open. Everyone has rear cameras and many are getting around view monitors. My buddy's turbo F150 has virtually all the goodies of my EX and a few I don't have, plus gets 22 mpg with over 350 hp. Where is the direct injection, turbo/hybrid, stop start tech? Voice commands that actually bring up songs? Back seats that fold with a button push from the front? Is Infiniti the new Saab?

Can anyone here tell me what the 28.5" rear seat leg room figure represents? Is that from the corner, the intersection where the rear seat meets the vertical seat back to the backside of the front seat @ knee height with the front seat in the rearmost position? :) I'm serious - anybody know?

The short answer is that it is complicated and somewhat "flexibly" interpreted.
