Last week, Greg and I stopped by the local Ford Dealer with an hour to kill. The saleswoman was at my door before I was out of the car (big surprise) but she wasn't overly pushy, which was a nice change of pace. I haven't exactly had good luck at Ford dealerships. She let us take the 2013 Focus ST for a test drive and answered all the questions we threw at her. I was really impressed with her knowledge (the stereotypes exist for a reason) about the car and her desire to learn from us as well. She can't drive a manual (which I think is a bit odd for a car salesperson) but she knows a lot about them, how they work, etc. Overall, we had a really good experience, we learned a lot, and we are still steadfast in our opinion that almost nothing on any new car lot is worth paying full price for.

All the nuts and bolts stuff can be found here on Ford's website. I'm not going to explain what you can look up for yourself. ;) It comes in three different trim levels. We drove the ST2 which has lots of the bells and whistles, Recaro seats, and the Eco boost engine. The ST3 has the V6 motor that gives you the same horsepower but is less fuel efficient. Still haven't figured out the appeal of that other than feeling all bad-a** and s*** when you say you drive a V6? :gotme

The exterior: I like it a lot. Ours was white with black interior. It's a bit edgy without being too overdone and I love hatchbacks. It sits really nice and it looks even better in person than it does in pics. The stance was perfect, we love the way the body lines flow along the fenders. Greg and I both liked the grill on the ST much better than the one on the regular Focus. The side mirrors were awesome. They had integrated blind spot mirrors which was an unexpected cool convenience. Speaking of those mirrors, the wind noise coming around them was almost nil. Ford nailed this one and their target demographic is going to love it. We're probably 20 years apart from their demographic and WE loved it. I'd powder coat the wheels black, tint the windows, and call it good. At this point, I would normally say that we'd lower it but it's pretty much right where it needs to be.

The interior.: The front seats are phenomenal. However, the backseat is damn near unusable. Greg did NOT fit and I just barely did. Our salesgirl sat behind me on the test drive and I had to scoot so far up for her to get in, it was almost uncomfortable to drive. I wouldn't even put a kid's car seat back there. However, it would be perfect for someone with no kids and a skinny dog. Hence, the demographic they are appealing to. Cargo capacity with the rear seats folded down is 44.8 cu feet.

The seats are really nice. They're Recaros, so they do have some extreme bolstering, which Greg loves. I would have no problem driving it to work everyday but I'm not sure how they would be on a long trip. The controls are conveniently placed and easy to use. The gauges are pod-mounted atop the dash. Not a lot of excess junk going on there, which I like. Again, all the goodies are listed on the website. It comes with anything and everything you might want. You just have to pay extra for some things. There is a lot of plastic that looked to be of very good quality / texture / appearance. There was a dry carbon-fiber look on a lot of the surfaces. The tops of the doors and dash had a very dense, rich rubber feel.

Performance. The ST is quick off the line, shifts smooth, and responds well to throttle, steering, and brake input. The brakes were a bit touchy to me but that's probably just me being used to driving the Insight so much. I'm sure they're fine. It handles very well. I did notice though that any time we ran over something in the road, all of that energy was transferred through the suspension, the seat, right into my spine and diaphragm. It was odd because when you talk, everything comes out as a stutter. Imagine driving over railroad tracks constantly and trying to talk. Sorry, but it's really hard to describe accurately. You'll just to go drive one and see for yourself. That might not be an issue here, since our roads are in pretty fabulous condition. However, in Pennsylvania or California, it would probably suck. Sticky Summer tires would probably eliminate these issues but for the price they want you to pay for this car, it shouldn't even be an issue.

Fuel economy. I was really surprised by the fuel economy. Ford claims 23/32 but the car we were driving had only averaged 18.2 so far and it only had 100 miles on it. I know that's largely due to a lot of people just hammering down on it during test drives (I DID IT). I'd say Ford is probably spot on with the claims given normal drivers / normal driving conditions but I'm pretty sure I would never get that out of it. :naughty:

Overall, I walked away thinking that the car was pretty awesome. It was fun to drive and I would recommend it but I would not buy one brand new. The one we drove was $28,000+. Base model Zs start at $33K, which is a whole lot more car for not much more money. There were a few things I didn't like but a whole lot of things I did. I wish we could rent one for a track event and see how it performs under those type of conditions because I was very impressed with it on the open road. I think someone needs to rent one of these for Carlisle and put it to the test. *Hint, Hint*

Pros: Quick acceleration, great handling, smooth shifts, exterior styling.

Cons: Lots of feedback from the road, lower than expected fuel economy, horrible back seat leg room.

Has a back door but doesnt have a usable back seat, kind of like the Hyundai Veloster. I'd like to see a 3-door version with an equally useless back seat.

Useless backseat, you say? I'm used to that. If it were my car I would probably just wrench 'em out and save weight. Although I do live in Pennsylvania, so I probably wouldn't like the ST unless it comes standard with a chiropractor.

Overall sounds like a good car, and I've been generally impressed with Ford's offerings as of late. My friend bought a new Fusion last year (just before they started looking really good, silly him) and it was very capable and generally "not bad". One thing I can't stand with Ford, however, is the damn bingbonging from leaving the door open, starting the car, swearing particularly loudly, etc., that every Ford seems to do. My friend told me it sounds like the car saying "Scooby-Doo" in beepboops and that's all I can hear every time. Kinda annoys me now.

Also, this thing has 270 foot-lbs of torque? Holy shnikes. Still seems too expensive to fit the hot-hatch niche, but you'd have to be a rich fool to buy a car brand-new anyway.

Pretty much right on Becky. I've driven 3 or 4 of them now as I was trying to trade the coblat in for one. I loved the sound of the car the most. It handeled real well and felt comfortable.

Nice read! I'm looking forwards to driving one, and if for some reason Avis started to rent them, I'd be all over that in no time!

Very cool! I have been waiting to see the Bex review of this car. Since you're into hatchbacks, I'm curious as to your insight on the following:

Mazdaspeed3 (the 2013 has a revised tech package (the nav screen is now USABLE as in larger than 2.5"), they're loaded out at $27k-ish, and a very simliar setup to the Focus ST).

Impreza WRX (try a wagon in the "Premium" trim - I predict you'll be wowed by the seats. I was - if I had sat in one before I bought my Speed3, I may have waited until I found the extra $2500 to buy the WRX instead. I found them to be a perfect balance of bolstering/support and comfort)

Nice writeup!

I wasn't aware you could get a Focus with a V6. But I definitely do NOT understand the appeal of the dated and mediocre Duratec V6 over the robust turbo 2 liter.

I was NOT expecting that out of you.

If this was LFX vs Ecotec or Pentastar vs whatever POS Mitsubishi turd Dodge is still putting in the Dart, I'd be singing a different tune. But unlike the other two, Ford is in the weird position of having a well-developed four cylinder powerplant alongside a neglected V6. The Duratec V6 is a cow that should have been put out to pasture a LONG time ago. But Ford just keeps carving the bore bigger like it's 1969 rather than replace it with something modern. Doesn't even have variable timing on the both sets of cams. It is 2013. Some Nissan and BMW engines don't even need throttlebodies anymore. And Ford's selling the same bucket of fail that was behind the curve when it launched in 2000. The VQ30 was a better engine five years before that. Nissan has evolved the VQ. The most interesting thing Ford has done with the Duratec V6 is try to convince people it belongs in their Jaguars (hint: it does not).

the Mazdaspeed 3 was already on the list, I'll add the WRX to it. :) As long as the dealerships cooperate with me, I'll drive whatever. I still haven't driven the Genesis Coupe yet which is high on the list. Our local Hyundai dealer is having a huge sale right now because their facility is under construction. They've got thousands marked off everything. Someone remind me not to take the checkbook. ;)

I never drove the big boy Genesis, I was looking into buying the Genesis Coupe when they were running the 200hp turbo 4, it was disappointingly slow and too heavy of a car for a little 4, granted I did test drive the auto since they didn't have any manuals on the lot (I was looking to buy a manual) but it turned me off on the whole car, it felt like a pig compared to both my 02 wrx and my 95 4Runner

The new Gen Coupe 2.0T is putting out around 260 or 270HP now. Test drive an R-Spec. I think you'll find it's a totally different car than the one you test drove, and a hell of a bang for the buck for $26K IMHO.

I test drove a manual 200hp and also found it way too slow. I've been itching to get into one of the new ones.

I would love to test drive the new one, I was actually waiting for it before buying a new car, but as circumstances have taken me to Australia for the near future I'll have to wait and see what Hyundai has to offer in 4 years. They have done very well lately and Ford has bounced back from the rut they were in as well.

I love the induction note, the rave handling reviews, and fact that they apparently put such a stiff sway bar in the back. So instead of being an understeer superhero (as most "high" hp/tq FWD vehicles are) it produces controllable oversteer when pushed to the limit. I was surprised when I learned that an LSD wasn't available but nothing's perfect right. I've always been a fan of hot hatches and if I were in the market for one the ST would be at the top of the list.
