Hello all,

There was considerable discussion and speculation here back in May about a 2013 Coupe and when my September issue of Road and Track arrived, I noticed they have a 2013 New Cars section that mentions our rides as well.

Got my Google hat on and discovered this from 7/2:

Jump in anywhere  .

Best wishes

So let me get this straight: When Nissan was ending their 3rd gen Altimas, they went out with a bang by making the SE-R. Now when they finally make and end the coupe, they end it with JUST a 2.5? I mean don't get me wrong I like my 2.5s, but at least I'd have gone out with another SE-R type concept.

I would personally like to talk to the person incharge of this if this FWD sportscar happens, and flat out tell him he is an absolute idiot :tisk: !! I heard maybe AWD for it though as well so there is hope ;), but if they only stick that CVT in it.... :tisk: (murmuring angry thoughts)... Disappointed is not a good enough word!

Seriously.. If they're offering both drivetrains then maybe the "sport" car is going to be something similar to the Altima Coupe, an aggressively styled regular coupe that comes with as an AWD "performance" version. Idk

Believe you guys may be on the right track regarding Nissan's plans for a sports car. The small, RWD segment appears to be growing in popularity and perhaps an intro with FWD, graduating later to AWD is in their thinking.

Let's keep talking it up! The suits at Nissan read our musings, you know!

My SE is the last new car ever, however.

They probably have an account on me by now if they are lol. I've been pretty vocal about their cars and my feelings on especially the new Altima :ohno: ! If theyr reading this.... Nissan!! isn't your motto " SHIFT_xxxxxx" ? Last I knew, the CVT doesn't have gears that shift  ! On top of that, your phasing out the MT on your most popular car!

...Ok, I'll just stop now :gapteeth: !!

Thinking we are leaving the original topic, but OK by me, since we are still talking about Nissan's plans for the 2013 Coupe, and perhaps things they could have done better in days of yore.

Supportive and constructive comments for the Nissan suits who are lurking would probably be appreciated...by everyone!

Go for it wade001 :wavey: .

Best wishes.

I don't think our coupe will be around for long, the mini Z or whatever will be made to compete with the BRZ. I bought my coupe when I lived up in Minnesota and needed a FWD(6 months of winter). Now that I live down south I'm looking forward to the new G39 coupe for the upgrade. I do agree with Wade on the Shift_xxxxxx, there should ALWAYS be a manual option available.

can do! but it wont be entirely off topic n keep it short, I could write an essay ;)!

I'll start about the coupe.. IMO, they hit the design of the coupe for the most part perfect, I'll explain why I say this. At the basics, for a japanese car it is by far the nicest and cleanest looking design! The shape/curves of it flows perfectly, simple but sexy. A lot of cars out there are not like that, they have too much going on and the lines don't flow. The common feeling i get is something along the lines of, looks like they took an air hose and puffed it up! I like the QR although it is limited, and love the 6spd. What I would have done to change it is only one thing, that would have been to make it at least RWD. This car would have been the perfect predecessor to the 240sx as far as I'm comscerned!

Now, about what Nissan is doing as far as the altima and somewhat in general. I really like the 4th gen altima, sedan included. As far as I'm conscerned, the now previous gen altima was it's own car. The new one is not even close to that, it looks like they took the looks of the maxima and 370z and just threw them together into some frankenstein. It's not bad, but it does not look like its own, by that I mean it should look different from the other cars they sell. The lines/shapes are too complicated and confused, the car does not flow at all. Then, they eliminate the manual option, that just kills it for me! Nissan is supposed to be known as a drivers car, they just contradicted themselves with that move completely!

The 2013 coupe, now only given with the 2.5 and CVT. Again my comment is the same in regard to the CVT as the only option.

Please don't think I'm conceited, but now we have the Maxima,Altima, and altima coupe only provided with a CVT! People Are trying to grab any year model in manual because that is a great car when it comes to having some more fun, the way it should still be and that their motto is supposed to represent that aspect! IMO, They are killing their main car lines ability to support what they say they are about! Just imagine the new maxima with a 6spd, and maybe you can imagine just how incredibly different the car would be in every aspect of performance/modifying/etc.. I would have drooled for something like that, even a RWD AC!

So, IMO, The new Altima is neat, but a fail :(! Their answer to the BRZ/FRS is a fail if only FWD is the only option with a performance car perspective, especially, I repeat especially if they only give the CVT!! I pray they at least wont do that! I also dont like the design at first look :squint: .. IMO, they should have been the ones that first came out with a 4 banger RWD sports coupe, instead of waiting for someone else to do it first! But, if they did something like our car and RWD or AWD and a solid motor, they would have the market.

Nissan has shown some real cool cars that are awesome, like the GTR and Juke-R! But yet sell cars that dont give anywhere that experience. If they just stopped forcing the CVT people would think differently! I'm not saying everyone should drive manual, or trying to talk down the CVT, but that one thing changes the car completely and they should at least give the option for those drivers!

thats a big gripe I have with nissan right now :poke: ..

Now that that is said.... :inout:

I think the new sedan looks more like the concept Allure. It will be interesting to see what the rear end of the 2013 coupe will look like.

wadeoo1,

Thanks for your extended, thoughtful input. So many guys and gals fall to temptation and contribute only a humerous one-liner or two (ocassionaly guilty myself ).

Regarding lines of the Coupe, I still have a picture from Autoweek, back in '07, showed it to my wife and we decided that was the car we wanted. Got a cost print-out from Consumer Report, went to the Nissan store, speced out what we wanted and made an offer $1000 below what CR said was dealer cost. Salesman went to his manager, came out in 2 minutes and said, "We've got a deal!". :wtf2:.

Luved the lines right back to the well designed finishing piece that curves down around the rear pipes. Ever notice how many cars, from the rear, make you feel like you're peeking under a skirt :chuckle:?

I'm with you on looks. RWD would have been awesome, but then Nissan would have had to do major redesign of the basic sedan platform they had to work with. Also, adding a drive shaft, rear diff and modified suspension may have put the car far above the price target they had in mind. Look at how many folks got to buy and enjoy the popularly priced FWD version.

Guess there's no accounting for taste cuz I really like the looks of the new sedan and was looking forward to the same basics carrying over to a '13 AC.

Regarding the 6sp, I'm with you on "row your own" but the marketplace is speaking and believe only somewhere around 5% of 2011 cars were delivered with manual transmissions. In today's brutally competitive market, providing sticks to a very small number of customers probably does not pencil and no matter how much the Shift_ engineers begged the bean counters to change their minds, ain't gonna happen :frown:.

Well, so much for my comments on your thoughts.

Best wishes.

No problem!

To be honest, the AC should have been it's own model! Made off of a different platform and sold as the new 240sx, and it would still be affordable ;)! They should just have kept the same looks :yesnod ! I would have jumped on that in a second!

About the manual, I know so many people that wish they had and want a manual, but it's so freaking hard to get one! I think there are more people out there that want one then you think ;)! I think things may change a lil as more people seem to be buying them or looking for one though.

I know i wish mine was a manual, but every damn coupe on the lot when i went was a CVT. The CVT in our cars does not do the engine in the car any justice (Talking v6 owners). I agree with the fact that the Maxima should have a 6 speed option. They are marketing it as a 4 door sports car. Sports cars usually have the option of a manual, my dad has one and its nice but the CVT kills it sometimes, again, it doesnt do the engine justice. Pretty soon the Z is gonna have a CVT :tisk:

Just a thought on CVT's.

While I believe we can all agree ACV's (autonomously controlled vehicles) like the Google car are a long way off, manufacturers are no doubt moving their R&D in that direction. Clearly, a stick shift is not going to be compatible with ACV technology and purely manual transmission development is going to take a back seat. Maybe dual clutch, semi-auto manuals with paddles, but I don't see a bright future for sticks :-(. Gettem while you can...
