Our Model S was of Signature Performance spec, which means its AC induction motor puts out 416 hp and that it blasts to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds. Even those numbers -- positively absurd for a large sedan that uses not a lick of gasoline -- fail to communicate how crazy it actually feels. "It's alarming to jam the accelerator of such a big car and have it surge forward so quickly and so quietly," says copy editor Rusty Blackwell. Like most electric cars, the Model S generates its torque almost instantly. Unlike most electric cars, Tesla's torque amounts to a prodigious 443 lb-ft, all of which goes to the rear wheels. The only indicators of your stunning momentum are the rush of scenery around you, a faint whine, and the digital speedometer's difficulty keeping pace. "Driving the Model S is decidedly not like piloting a Nissan Leaf or an electric Smart," notes road test editor Christopher Nelson. Contributor Ezra Dyer, meanwhile, was so impressed that he arranged an informal drag race to 100 mph with a 560-hp BMW M5. The Model S won. "It bears repeating: this thing is silly quick," he concluded.
You'll note that we haven't even discussed Tesla's raison d'etre, which is, in Musk's words, "To accelerate the advent of electric cars." That's another credit to the Model S's overall execution and seductive powers. "The electric motor does not define this car," says Nelson. But it is, at the end of the day, what makes this very good sport sedan an absolute game changer. The Model S's range, rated by the EPA at 265 miles with the largest battery, finally fits the American conception of driving. Want to take the family from Washington, D.C., to New York? No problem. Stop for an hour at one of Tesla's Supercharger stations being installed throughout the country, and you can travel on to Boston. The even bigger psychological advantage, though, is the freedom to go about your daily life, with all its spontaneity and last-minute shopping trips, without the fear of running low. Electric cars that participated in past Automobile of the Year competitions have required special testing procedures -- shorter drive routes, strict guidelines against aggressive driving, industrial charging trucks. The Model S wore no such kid gloves. We plugged it in at night and then drove it all day -- and drove it hard.
But you might not be able to get one. Only 250 sedans have been delivered to customers as of this writing -- a rounding error for any mainstream automaker (some 13,000 customers have put down at least $5000 as a reservation). Musk himself admits that Tesla's path to viability is far from complete. "There have been car company start-ups before. The real challenge is to ramp up production. Then we're a real car company."
We can't say for certain whether Tesla will be able to make that happen. The auto industry is tough enough for a giant like General Motors. What we can say with this award is that Tesla deserves to succeed. It has managed to blend the innovation of a Silicon Valley start-up, the execution of a world-class automaker, and, yes, the chutzpah of its visionary leader. The result is the Model S. It's not vaporware. It's our Automobile of the Year.

I saw a few of them at SEMA I like!

Performance to 60 is equal of my Jag, size is similar. Might be what I replace the Jag with in 2016 when it is about to go off warranty.

At the current rate of production you might want to put a deposit down now.

Makes you wonder if the leaf would be selling better if Nissan took a page out of Mr. K's playbook of "America doesn't need another 4 door boringmobile".

...probably not. Not many people want to shell out that sort of cash for a Nissan, although it would have been cool if the first mass-produced EV was an absolute scorcher on the track :)

I honestly think it's even simpler than that:

Nobody wants their EV or hybrid to look like an EV or a hybrid anymore. The Model S looks like any other modern sporty sedan. It doesn't look like an electric sedan. It looks like A SEDAN. The only people who still want to get noticed in their hybrids are Prius owners, and I'd wager even a large number of them don't care if they get noticed anymore. EVERYONE makes an EV now. Looking weird isn't a benefit.

They are about a year early for announcing the 2013 cars. That really bugs me.

Historically, "next-year's model" has generally come out in September. So they're not early at all. Goes all the way back to the 50s or earlier. Nothing new.

Its actually a federal mandate (from what I understand) that you can't build MY12 vehicles after September 1st.
You CAN, however build MY12.5 vehicles straight until December 31st.

I'm involved on this now we have a car that is pending CARB and EPA can't really say much but, if you have issued 2012 VINS to a chassis you can produce them after September 2012 until Dec 31st 2012. You can start selling 2013's after September. We didn't make the 2012 model year but will make it in for 2013. I will post everything when I can.

And it has always bugged me. In the motorcycle world, new models generally had information releases in december of the previous year to as late as February of that year, with models being for sale in the first quarter of that year, so a 2001 came out as late as march in 2001.

At the end of the year, 2013 in this case, the 2013 car of the year should be announced after consumers have had the majority of the year to drive it, report any immediate reliability issues, mpg discrepancies, etc... I hate to say it, but I want it more like the movie awards when it comes to timeliness. So they should be announcing the 2012 car of the year, not 2013.

I got the door open on a Model S at the Detroit show. One of the boothbags (they had dudes dressed like douchebags rather than hot booth girls) yells "SIR, CLOSE THAT DOOR!"

I and some guys near me had a good laugh, then I showed them how to wave their hand across the handle to make it pop out to open the door. :D

I'm sure the petite boothbag made sure to lock it properly after my little security breach.

I can finally talk about this a bit, I guess. :)

Last year, I visited Tesla HQ in Palo Alto and saw an S being prepped for a showroom model. Sat in it and checked out the display electronics and inside of the car too.

Along with this beautiful white one, there were a number of them being assembled for engineering testing - got to see them totally taken apart, the suspension, electronics, motors, the display screen, how and where the batteries are placed inside the car, etc., etc., etc. Unlike the first model, this model is mostly their own design - chassis, suspension, etc.

Totally cool trip and it was fun to talk to the engineers working on the vehicle!

The Model S is definitely now on my purchase radar in a few years! :dblthumb: ... now that Infiniti has gone certain with the new silly Q-digits naming convention. :squint:

I'd love one of these, but I think I'd have to have a Fisker. My wife and I like to take at least one, if not 2 cross-county trips a year, and the range extender is a must for us. Maybe once the infrastructure is there for fast charging, but until then, I still need something that can burn gasoline.

Tripped me out seeing a Tesla store in the Washington Square Mall. One entire mall stall/store with a Model S, Model S underpinnings display, and a Roadster in the center along with info/specs/models along the outer wall. Seriously cool cars.
