I would like to purchase a USB hard drive to use in place of an Ipod to play my music library. Will work? I just tried a usb thumb dribe and it works fine. However, when I tried my seagate usb hard drive it said the device was not compatible. Not sure whether it is because the hard drive had other data in the root directory, or if the device is fundamentlly uncompatible. I bought a second hard drive to use but hesitate to unwrap it until I kow it will be recognized. Should I take it back?

I think you meant USB thumb drive, in which case the answer is yes. Here's what the manual says "This system supports various USB memory sticks, USB hard drives and iPod® players. There are some USB devices which may not be supported with this system"

Could you use a "USB hard drive", probably not. Just get a decent sized thumb drive. BTW, while I have not tested it, the system seems to be limited.
"USB: Folder levels: 8, Folders 255, Files: 2500 (Max. 255 files for one folder) Memory size: 4GB"

ahhh the fabled 4 gb limit. The thumb drive was 4 GB, the hard drive was 500 GB. Strange, since the ipod is 8 GB and works fine so far.

Where did you find this bit? I missed it in my perusal through the manual.

I did a quick search through my pdf version. 2011 Owners manual section 4-27 (pg. 185).

Found the chart that contained the info. 3 radios available, 2 of them have a chart that lists the usb memory limit as 4 GB. Guess which one I have? :) This evening I will pull the 8GB sd card out of my camera, poke it into the USB adapter, copy on some songs and see if it works. If not, guess I'll get a couple of those little tiny 4GB memory sticks that only protrudes 1/4" or so from the port. It's a shame I can't get to 40 GB without an Ipod, that'd be my entire music library.

Update: Completed the test as I described. Filled the entire memory card with music. It worked fine. Granted, the Ipod has a smoother inhterface, but clearly the limits have been upped. Does anyone know what the max size is for a USB thumb drive? 16GB? 32GB? To be clear, I'm driving the 2012 Rogue with single Cd player, satnav and a USB port. 8GB works, 500 GB does not.

500GB? Harddrive right? Was it partitioned? Won't work if it was. I just ordered a 64GB jump drive from TigerDirect.com for $25. I'll let you know the results. BTW, is your system the BOSE premium?

One problem with the hard drive was probably lack of/insufficient power from the USB port. Did the hard drive have its own power supply?

Yeah, I wouldn't give up on the hard drive option yet. Try getting a power adapter for the drive so you can power it from the cigarette lighter plug. Or just bite the bullet and go with the iPod, I've been using the same oldish 120 or 160 gig iPod for a few years now, through a couple of different cars. You could get a used one and who cares about battery life since it'll be USB powered.

Hard drive had all data on a single partition. It is a usb drive, so no hardware to provide a separate power supply, just a mini usb connector. Its a seagate free agent and it works fine plugged into the usb port of my laptop. I just purchased a PNY 16 GB usb flash drive and will try that in a moment. It is a super low profile, it onlyu sticks out of the port 1/4", so I feel comfortable working with it in there permanently. If it wotks I will buy a second and use them together to store a copy of my music library.

Update: 16GB works fine. If someone finds an upper limit I'd appreciate sharing. Wouldn't mind buying one more large thumb drive if I KNEW it would work, but the bigger ones begin to get much more expensive. The 16GB was $20 and allows me to store about half my library. I'm fine for now.

Could it be how the Hard Drive was Formatted? Most USB Drives are formatted using FAT32 system whereas Hard Drives NTFS (To accomodate larger file sizes) It could be that the radio in the rogues do not recognize NTFS?

Worth a try to reformat your Hard Drive using FAT32.

Hadn't thought of that. I have an old computer with a hard drive I'm not using, I could reformat it and rig up a temp power supply to give it a whirl. If it works I could obtain a permanent USB drive and reformat. I'm assuming either windows 7 or xp provides options to reformat HDDs as FAT 32.

Yep just right click on the drive when you see it on the menu bar and choose format. It should give you the option of which format to use. If this works, I may do this myself. Not enough tunes on my 8GB Nano.

Do you want to try it first? I have to find a place to park all the data on my HD. If i knew it worked, I'd just buy a drive fron the start.

I may try it on the weekend. I've got a Seagate Goflex portable that I use for file storage. I'll see if I can clear it off and reformat the drive.

Bingo! Just tried a 64GB USB flash drive that came formatted NTFS. Head unit threw up an error message saying the file system wasn't supported.

Sheesh, I should have looked at the manual first! "USB memory: FAT16, FAT32"
