2012 Rogue rear end popping

I have a 2012 Rogue with 168K miles. I purchased it new and replaced the CVT at 125K. Recently I have noticed there is a popping noise from the rear end. It occurs when I first begin a trip and turn. The sound comes from the outside corner (If I turn right, it comes from the left) it seems as if there are gears slipping. It only happens at the beginning of a trip ( when the rear end is cold?) I did notice if I engage the AWD it doesn't happen. Any thoughts on source? It does not presently affect driveablility.

I noticed this on mine. In my case I wouldn’t really call it popping but on reflection I can see where others might. I replaced the rear sway bar bushings. It didn’t seem to help, I changed out the rear differential oil and no more sound. There is a write up in the DIY section.

It only seemed to happen when I was turning from a stop. A right or left turn from a stop sign.

Interesting. Was the diff oil low before change?

No, just old.

And, if I may pester you one more time; at how many miles?

Sorry didn’t see your question till just now. About 65k. After changing the differential oil the noise disappeared. It’s a cheap fix if it works. While you’re down there look at those rear bushings, while changing mine didn’t make the noise go away they were worn somewhat.
